Striker to follow in Heidar's footsteps

Last Updated: Fri, 03 Aug 2012 14:54

Tommy Smith looks set to follow Heidar Helguson from Queens Park Rangers to Cardiff City over the next few days.

The popular R's striker is wanted by his former Watford boss Malky Mackay at the ambitious Championship club and talks are now at an advanced stage to take him to Wales.

The writing was on the wall when boss Mark Hughes left Smith behind in England while the squad travelled to Malaysia on the pre-season tour.

Smith - like Helguson - was a key figure in Rangers' push for promotion in the latter part of the 2010-11 season - culminating in his clincher against the Hornets on the penultimate day.

Helguson last night completed his free transfer from Loftus Road and will train with his new club-mates today before making his Cardiff debut in the pre-season game at Oxford United tomorrow.

The Icelander has signed a one-year contract and his task is to help the Bluebirds launch a strong challenge for promotion from the Championship.

Same, I'm not massively excited by this but QPR fans seem to rate him.

Another case of Malky going in for players he knows all about. If Bellers does sign, Smith will be a bench player for sure.

I would expect to see Smith cutting in from the right wing, like Kimbo would do from the left.

Wouldn't at all surprise me if Bellamy played up front in a 4-4-2 with Helguson!

(pending a possible Bellamy transfer)

Can't see Velikonja making an instant impact in this league - so think we'll see him off the bench at half time/70 mins etc. Now that Malky has a decent sized squad to rotate.... Same with Mason.

There will be plenty of quality on the bench as well as the pitch.

Mason was our best attacker last year... Can't see him getting benched (I would play him in the hole behind front two) :ayatollah:

Again wouldnt complain if we signed Smith although i'm sure many will  but we have always complained about enough depth to our squad in the past and also a lack of a few experienced heads when the going gets tough. Both Helgusson and Smith give us that experience now if or when we add Bellamy and a decent centre half or utility defender then i think we will be ready to have a decent stab at promotion the clincher would be that 20 goal plus striker :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

We suffered last year from a lack of depth and quality in the squad. Malky is doing that judging by the players he is looking to bring in. They obviously all can't play at the same time but it will be nice to know we have competition for places and players who can come in of similar quality if we have injuries.

So Mason pushes who out of midfield? Whitts or Gunnarson?

If I was to pick a line-up it would look something like this: -

-------------------- Marshall --------------------------
McNaughton ----- Hudson ----- Turner ----- Taylor
----- Kimbo ----- Whittingham ----- Gunnarson ----
--------------------- Mason ----------------------------
------ Bellamy*/Velikonja ----- Helguson -----------

*If Bellamy signs

No need to drop whitts/gunnarson

Depth is better than no depth but I still think we need another two defenders.

Competition for places is good. If he performs the best then he will start. Simples. :D

In all seriousness though... If he out performs anybody its prob going to be Gunnarson, so whoever is the best of those two starts. :ayatollah:

Personally always thought he was a terrific player and I'll be more than happy to see him in a City shirt. Some of you boys make me smile with your negative comments. Would you rather have a squad containing Helgusson/ Smith/ Bellamy (hopefully) this season or be as we were last season with "over the bar" Miller as our attacking edge with a couple of raw but promising kids, Mason/ Gestede, as back-up. It's all about building a team to get out of this f@cking division. What happens if/ when we do is another story for another day.

Swap whitts and gunnarson around?

If this happens it will be the first time that I will have been disappointed by one of Malky's signings. I just don't think that we need him. As a wide man he's got no real pace and would certainly not get in ahead of Kimbo or Bellamy (if we get him) and as a forward he can't play the lone striker role and as a second forward we have Mason and Velikonja (I don't think Velikonja is big enough to play as a target man) so why sign someone of his age with no resale value and probably coming here on a big wage. If we are looking for depth I would sooner take some promising youngsters from a lower league or abroad. More than happy to be proved wrong though. :ayatollah:

Can't see Mutch at £2 million being a bench player.
Don't think Super Kev will start either.

......................................Marshall............................................

Prem loan............Hudson............Turner.................Taylor

Kim Bo..............Mutch..........Whittingham..........Bellamy

...................Helguson/Velikonja........Smith.......................

Bench: Lewis, McNaughton, Gunnarson, Mason, Harris, Ralls

Strength throughout the side and a very strong bench.
Mason to be used as an impact player on the hour.

Well happy with that line up.

;) Good post (god knows they are few and far between) I do think, as been stated many times on here, we need a front man who know's where the net is (a 20+ goalscorer) but they just are not around and those who are go for silly money, we have very similar players to smith here already, imo ;)

Re: Talks with Tommy Smith at an "advanced stage"

As Bellamy hasn't signed then below would be my team.....

----------------------------------Marshall----------------------------

McNaughton----------Hudson----------Turner-------------Taylor

--------------------Mutch-----------------Whittingham--------------

Cowie----------------------------Mason-------------------------Bo-Kyung

---------------------------------Helguson--------------------------------

Bench:
Gk: Lewis
Blake
Gunnarsson
Kiss
Mason
Velikonja
Earnshaw

Really can't see how the likes of Kadeem Harris, McPhail, Ralls, Gerrard and Gestede are gonna get near this squad. How nice is it to finally have major options in the squad! If Smith and Bellamy then come in.....wow

I cant see CB39 coming back if i'm honest so Smith should get game time if we do manage to sign him.
