Tommy Smith looks set to follow Heidar Helguson from Queens Park Rangers to Cardiff City over the next few days.
The popular R's striker is wanted by his former Watford boss Malky Mackay at the ambitious Championship club and talks are now at an advanced stage to take him to Wales.
The writing was on the wall when boss Mark Hughes left Smith behind in England while the squad travelled to Malaysia on the pre-season tour.
Smith - like Helguson - was a key figure in Rangers' push for promotion in the latter part of the 2010-11 season - culminating in his clincher against the Hornets on the penultimate day.
Helguson last night completed his free transfer from Loftus Road and will train with his new club-mates today before making his Cardiff debut in the pre-season game at Oxford United tomorrow.
The Icelander has signed a one-year contract and his task is to help the Bluebirds launch a strong challenge for promotion from the Championship.

Wouldn't at all surprise me if Bellamy played up front in a 4-4-2 with Helguson!
(pending a possible Bellamy transfer)
Can't see Velikonja making an instant impact in this league - so think we'll see him off the bench at half time/70 mins etc. Now that Malky has a decent sized squad to rotate.... Same with Mason.
There will be plenty of quality on the bench as well as the pitch.

Mason was our best attacker last year... Can't see him getting benched (I would play him in the hole behind front two)

So Mason pushes who out of midfield? Whitts or Gunnarson?

If I was to pick a line-up it would look something like this: -
-------------------- Marshall --------------------------
McNaughton ----- Hudson ----- Turner ----- Taylor
----- Kimbo ----- Whittingham ----- Gunnarson ----
--------------------- Mason ----------------------------
------ Bellamy*/Velikonja ----- Helguson -----------
*If Bellamy signs
No need to drop whitts/gunnarson

As a wide man he's got no real pace and would certainly not get in ahead of Kimbo or Bellamy (if we get him) and as a forward he can't play the lone striker role and as a second forward we have Mason and Velikonja (I don't think Velikonja is big enough to play as a target man) so why sign someone of his age with no resale value and probably coming here on a big wage. If we are looking for depth I would sooner take some promising youngsters from a lower league or abroad. More than happy to be proved wrong though.
