The striker last night completed a free transfer from Premier League club Queens Park Rangers and will train with his new clubmates this morning.

Helguson has signed a one-year contract and his task is to help the Bluebirds launch a strong challenge for promotion from the Championship.

Manager Malky Mackay knows his new signing well as they were at Watford together when Mackay stopped playing and moved into coaching.

The arrival of Helguson means Mackay has now brought in five new signings this summer, joining Etien Velikonja, Jordon Mutch, Joe Lewis and Kim Bo-kyung, who is still on Olympic duty with South Korea and preparing for their quarter-final against Great Britain at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff tomorrow night.

There is little doubt that Helguson, 34, is a direct replacement for Kenny Miller, the hard-running Scotland centre-forward who recently joined Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.

Helguson is used to the lone striker role which was favoured by Mackay last season, having played as the spearhead for QPR in the Championship under former Rangers boss Neil Warnock.

He is also comfortable in a front two. Despite being under 6ft tall he has a huge spring which makes him a major threat in the air.

Helguson is brave and strong with his back to goal and brings team-mates into the play when he holds the ball up or produces deft flicks to pick out teammates.

Though not blessed with genuine pace, he has an effective all-round game which made him QPR’s top scorer last season and will be a real threat in Championship football.

Meanwhile, ticket sales for Cardiff’s visit to Barry Town on Wednesday are closing in on the 1,000 mark.

Mackay has pledged to send a strong team with players who don’t play at AFC Bournemouth the previous evening, including substitutes, likely to feature at Jenner Park.

Capacity for the pre-season match at Jenner Park (7.30pm) has been set at 2,000 and tickets cost £5 adults, under-11s £3.

Cardiff’s visit to the Vale of Glamorgan club will kick off 100th anniversary celebrations being organised by Barry Town Supporters Committee, who are solely responsible for the funding, running and survival of the football club.

Tickets will not be available on the day of the game, but are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/barrytownsc
