Tommy Smith could be the next player to join Cardiff City from QPR.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay has completed the signing of Heidar Helguson from Rangers and is looking to agree a deal for Smith after the forward was told he can leave Loftus Road.

Cardiff also recently made an enquiry about Jay Bothroyd, who left them to join the R’s on a Bosman free transfer a year ago.

Like Helguson, Smith knows Mackay well from their time together at Watford and has plenty of Championship experience.

He moved to west London from Portsmouth for £1.5m in 2010 and played a major role in helping Rangers win promotion.

But the 32-year-old made only seven first-team appearances following Mark Hughes’ appointment as manager in January and has since fallen further down the pecking order.

Several other clubs have shown an interest in Smith but are struggling to meet his wage demands.

Hughes is keen for a number of QPR’s fringe players to move on this summer.

Luke Young is also surplus to requirements but his future is unclear after a potential move appeared to fall through.

I would be very suprised by this, when Malky took over Jay was still a free agent and yet decided against offering him a contract. Why would he go back for him now when he had his chance last year? Would love to see Jay back here mind, arguably the best striker we've had in the last 10 years. I just can't see it happening though.

If we could add bellamy and a defender i think we would be capable of promotion but add bothroyd to that i think we would have a HUUUGE chance

That's exactly what I thought.

However maybe Malky's decided that having looked at the squad and having had time to complete a dossier on him he may be able to get something out of him? Who knows.

I like Tommy Smith but if we get Bellars weve got stacks of options across the midfield / out wide.

If we dont get Bellars then im happy with Smith. Intelligent footballer more than proven at this level.

Never been fussed on Smith, flatters to deceive. One good season, 4 seasons ago. It's not like QPR suffered after he broke his leg.

Bothroyd on loan could be a shout, season long with cheap wages.

Giving us three players in the target man mould finishing up the position.

Having now signed Helguson would be surprised if we are after Jay

Re: Linked to Tommy Smith

Hope we are not after Smith. Would be very disappointed if we signed him. What does he offer that we don't have with our other players? No pace at all. Where would he play? We've got an excellent midfield with lots of good cover. We need someone who offers exceptional pace or great strength/height or a natural goal scorer. Smith fits none of these. On top of all that he would command a very high wage with no resale value at his age. We just don't need him IMO. If we get Bellamy and perhaps Maynard we need a couple of good defenders, one to push our full backs, who I think are a bit weak, and cover at CB......achieve this and we'll be fine. More than fine in fact. :ayatollah:
