GOALKEEPER David Marshall makes his first appearance of the season when Cardiff City travel to play League Two Cheltenham Town in their pre-season match in Gloucestershire.

Scottish international Marshall was rested when the Bluebirds faced non-league Forest Green Rovers and were edged out 1-0.

He’s back this evening at Cheltenham’s Whaddon Road ground and manager Malky Mackay said: “David stayed at home last weekend because I wanted our other two goalkeepers to play half a match each.

“But he will be playing against Cheltenham.

“I was delighted with the attitude and work ethic shown against Forest Green.

“We were able to give young players experience of first team football and everybody who travelled played at least part of the game.

“Tonight against Cheltenham some will start and stay on for an hour or so.”

Mackay used 23 players against Forest Green, including goalkeepers Joe Lewis and Elliot Parish, and nobody played more than 45 minutes.

The Bluebirds boss will now be giving his frontline players including Peter Whittingham, Mark Hudson, Ben Turner, Andrew Taylor, Aron Gunnarsson and Etien Velikonja far longer this evening.

City know they are in for a difficult test against a Cheltenham team who battled to a 1-0 win against Birmingham City on Saturday thanks to a 12th minute goal from young defender Harry Hooman.

The Robins also drew 1-1 against Welsh Premier League Port Talbot Town during a four-day training camp in South Wales.

Mackay’s team tonight will be without Stephen McPhail, who limped off at Forest Green with a tight hamstring, plus Don Cowie (thigh), Kevin McNaughton (thigh), Rudy Gestede (knee) and Jordon Mutch (hip).

None of the niggling injuries are serious and most of them will be available for Saturday’s match at Oxford United.

Mutch, City’s £2m signing from Birmingham City, is yet to make his debut having had a minor hip injury.

Mackay said: “Jordon is almost ready for tonight’s match, but it’s highly unlikely I will take any risk with those who have niggles. It is much better to give them a few more days and make sure they are okay for our match at Oxford.”

n IBBY Farah, Cardiff City’s tenacious young midfield player, is set to leave the club and could join Birmingham City.

The 20-year-old from Butetown in Cardiff signed a first year professional contract a year ago after emerging through the youth Academy system.

But he has been unable to make an impact under Mackay and looks set to link up with Cardiff’s Championship rivals Birmingham.

Farah Made only one first team appearance for Cardiff, playing 120 minutes in their 3-1 win at Oxford United in the Carling Cup last season.

He later played three games for Tamworth during a loan spell.
