Should professional footballers use Twitter?

Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:38 pm

After Rio Ferdinand's charge by the FA, this debate will undoubtedly arise. With racial issues such as this one, players (eg Anthony Gerrard) publicly venting their feelings, and Joey Barton's constant, umm...'Bartonism', is it wise for players to use Twitter?

I don't see how or why they should ban all professional footballers from using it just because some of them are complete idiots. Let them be idiots, then take the consequences.

What would you do if you were manager of a player being a Twitter twonk?

I saw an interview with Gordon Taylor saying he actually encourages it

People like Rio Ferdinand have millions of followers and get paid by Twitter to Tweet don't they?

While their profiles are so high it'll never stop

Should the FA/football club/manager have the authority to prevent an individual using it? After a charge or controversy for example.

I don't think so no, they should be warned of what's right an wrong thought.

And of course it can be suggested.

Remember MM told players not to use twitter during the play/offs.

Indeed, it should be left up to the individual to act responsibly I suppose.

The Cardiff lads are all good boys though

There are lots of sensitive little bunnies out there these days, so I think it's a mistake for them to do it.

If they can use it responsibly then yes.

To air the grievances, no.

You should have the balls to go see your manager if your not happy, not piss and whinge on the net.
