NEW RECRUIT ETIEN VELIKONJA VOWS TO SHINE AT CARDIFF CITY

SLOVENIAN striker Etian Velikonja has vowed to become a better player at Cardiff City.
The former NK Maribor hitman – who fired 20 goals in 46 appearances last season – linked up with his new City team-mates yesterday and will feature in today’s opening pre-season friendly at Forest Green Rovers (3pm).
“I am excited to be here,” said Velikonja, who has signed a four-year contract.
“Cardiff are giving me a big opportunity to improve as a player and make my career better.”
Velikonja stayed with Maribor for their Champions League tie against Zeleznicar, of Bosnia, before flying to Wales after his club’s 6-2 aggregate victory was confirmed in midweek.
“It’s been a busy time since I arrived,” Velikonja told the Cardiff City website.
“I am happy to have met my new clubmates and to see the manager again.
“Facilities at the club’s training centre are excellent and I am determined to do a good job for Cardiff.”
Central defenders Anthony Gerrard and Dekel Keinan, both out of favour under Mackay last season, are in the City squad at Forest Green.
The pair were left out of Mackay’s 21-strong training camp group in Switzerland.
But Mackay said: “Virtually every player is going to Forest Green and all of those who are 100 per cent fit will play a part.
“The only slight doubts are Don Cowie and Kevin McNaughton who feel a little tight and need a few more days to be ready.”

Felt a bit sorry for him yesterday he hardly got a pass below his waist, he certainly closed down well and i think he could do well for us this season

Get used to it he will be chasing alot of them over the season im guessing if we are going off the back half of last season and this game.

Having watched him at FGR he is obviously not a target man but he was not brought in to be one. He plays 'off the shoulder' and is quite an inteligent footballer. What I really liked about him was the fact that he attacks the ball when it gets played into the box -is brave- and looks to get in front of the defender every time, even with the por balls that were played in. I thought that was a very encouraging debut.
