Championship Transfer Update

Tue Jul 24, 2012 5:08 pm

Since the end of the season there have been 95 transfers to teams in the Championship. City have signed 3.

Most active have been Leeds & Posh with 8 transfers, Sheff Weds with 7 and Barnsley 6.

6 teams have signed less than Cardiff those being Bristol, Blackpool, Charlton and Millwall who have all signed 2 players. Both Forest & Watford have just been taken over by new owners hence little activity. Forest signed 1 yesterday whilst Watford have not made a signing to date.

Still a few weeks for MM to bring in a few and strengthen. :ayatollah:

still we signed him for a fee, 95 divided by 24 = 3.95 so with our signings we are their in the overall average, just some teams have signed loads other none :ayatollah:

There is no argument that we need more players in - and to get Kimbo confirmed as a Cardiff player. Bellamy would be great plus at least 3 more.

However, just tracking numbers of signings doesn't tell us anything.

How many players have left these clubs? How good is/was their squad to start with? Are they counting youth/reserve signings or players who will go straight into the match-day squad...?

I definitely wouldn't want to swap places with Leeds, Posh, Wendys or Barnsley. Some of their signings are poor/desperate - and we start with a much better core squad, with much more quality.

As the weekend arrives here is a round-up of the latest transfer news throughout the Championship including a number of completed signings, close deals and rumours from various clubs.

Leeds have finally completed the signing of Lee Peltier from Leicester City for a fee believed to be £500,000 with the right back signing a three year contract for Neil Warnock’s side. The player who can also play as a defensive midfielder made 40 appearances for Leicester last season after signing from Huddersfield but didn’t appear to be in Nigel Pearson’s plans for the new season. Leeds will also be hoping to sign Craig Mackail-Smith with Warnock working hard to bring the forward to Elland Road, a move that would seem strange for Brighton having signed him for a large fee only a year ago. Other strikers that have been linked with a move to Leeds are Nicky Maynard and Jermaine Beckford, we are told that any move for Beckford to a fellow Championship club is very unlikely due to his wage demands and should a club want to sign Nicky Maynard then they would have to be prepared to pay a large fee for him from West Ham, which seems to have put clubs off for now.

Another transfer that has been completed as expected is that of Simon Gillet for Nottingham Forest with the central midfielder reuniting with manager Sean O’Driscoll on a two year contract, with the two working together previously at Doncaster Rovers. The 26 year old joins on a free transfer having been one of Doncaster’s stand out performers over the past couple of seasons. Sean O’Driscoll is also looking to secure a move to James Coppinger of Doncaster as he seeks to strengthen his midfield options. Another midfielder that the club are still looking at is Portsmouth’s Liam Lawrence as he remains one of only two players still at the club following the departures of Dave Kitson and Kanu, the winger is in high demand due to his proven Championship quality and experience with clubs like Leeds and Birmingham also keeping track of the player, as already reported the player’s current wages seem to be what has prevented any move so far.

Another player who has been linked with a number of Championship clubs this summer is Emile Heskey following his release from Aston Villa. The 34 year old is reportedly attracting strong interest from Blackpool who have pulled out of a move for Leeds’ Billy Paynter after he failed to impress on trial, the player will now join up with League One side Doncaster ahead of their pre-season friendly against Barnsley. Heskey has previously attracted interest from a number of clubs including Paul Jewell’s Ipswich Town.

Bristol City are set to complete the signing of West Ham forward Sam Baldock, the 23 year old saw his chances limited at the London club following his transfer from MK Dons and has been attracting interest from a number of clubs this summer including newly promoted Charlton but Bristol City have seemingly won the race for the player’s signature.

Wolves have transfer listed winger Adam Hammill and also stated that Christophe Berra is set to depart the club. Hammill had previously impressed in the Championship for Barnsley and at a price of around £500,000 is attracting a lot of interest in the division with Nottingham Forest interested although Sheffield Wednesday are also very keen on the winger. Berra on the other hand looks more likely to move back to the Premier League with newly promoted clubs Southampton and West Ham interested in the Scottish defender.

edit: Seeing as other are linking to transfer sites I hope you don't mind me posting up these write ups when I do them :ayatollah:

Barnsley have bolstered their squad ahead of the upcoming season with the addition of attacking midfielder Tomasz Cywka on a free transfer following his release from Reading. The midfielder joined the Royals following falling out of favour with Derby manager Clough but found his chances limited with the promotion winning side.

Birmingham City have completed the loan signing of controversial West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison. The midfield was sold by Alex Ferguson who was unhappy with his attitude and he joined West Ham on a big contract deal, he only made 1 appearance for the London club as they got promoted and will be hoping to impress at another chance in the Championship.

Blackburn’s main priority is bringing in another forward following the 6 month injury to Leon Best who was signing for over £3,000,000. Among their targets is Simon Cox although their interest has recently cooled with Kean admitting that he is a big fan of Jordan Rhodes with the club set to improve their offer for him following a rejected offer to Huddersfield.

Emile Heskey has turned down the chance to join Ian Holloway’s Blackpool as the club now look at other options upfront. In defence they are trying to bring in experienced Brazilian Matheus Vivian on a free transfer following his impressive trial. In midfield Holloway is interested in Swansea midfielder Stephen Dobbie who has had two loan spells at the club in previous seasons however it remains to be seen if the player is in Laudrup’s plans or not.

Owen Coyle has pulled out of a move for 26 year old Columbian international Carlos Sanchez following the players expensive wage demands following the midfielders release by Valenciennes. The club have also rejected a bid from Swansea for central midfielder Mark Davies who could be a potential replacement for Joe Allen should he leave for Liverpool.

Following the arrival of Heidar Helguson and departure of Anthony Gerard to Huddersfield, Malky Mackay is pressing ahead with other transfers for the club as he seeks 2 or 3 more additions to the squad. Whilst it is likely he will look to bring in another defender capable of playing either centrally or on the right side he is first focussing on completing a deal for Bellamy. As we have reported the club have agreed a deal to bring him back to the club but there is still work to be done on Liverpool’s side in terms of a contractual agreement, on the opposite wing Cardiff may be bringing in Liam Lawrence who was on loan at the club last season. He is one of only two players left at Portsmouth and is looking to move away from the club with a number of other clubs such as Nottingham Forest and Leeds also interested.

Crystal Palace’s focus has been on defensive reinforcements following the departures of Nathaniel Clyne and Anthony Gardner. They have resigned Peter Ramage on a one year contract with the defender playing on loan for the club last season. The club are also interested in Manchester City’s young defender Ryan McGivern.

Derby have brought in 18 year old Michael Hoganson following his release from Newcastle United after the player impressed on trial.

Steve Bruce is seeking at least two new signings for Hull City. He has identified that the positions he is looking at are a central midfielder and a winger, with the club also looking to bring in one or two more players on free transfers to bolster the squad. We understand that he has been impressed with striker Matty Fryatt so far and is looking to start the player upfront alongside new signing Nick Proschwitz.

Nottingham Forest continue to be busy in the market, Sean O’Driscoll’s first priority was to bring in defenders and he has certainly done that with Daniel Ayala coming in on loan from Norwich joining the signings of Greg Halford, Danny Collins and Dan Harding in the club’s new look defence. Sean O’Driscoll has also admitted the club’s interest in West Brom forward Simon Cox.

Sheffield Wednesday have finally completed the long anticipated transfer of Michail Antonio from Reading after the winger enjoyed a successful loan spell at the club last season.

Following the improved offer from Stoke City for winger Michael Kightly, it is understood that Wolves have accepted the offer for the midfielder as he looks set to leave the club.

Chelsea’s young left back Ben Gordon has joined Birmingham City on a half season loan deal and is set to conclude Lee Cark’s transfer spending.

Blackburn Rovers have signed Dickson Etuhu from Fulham as well as Colin Kazim-Richards on loan from Galatasaray with the Turkish international returning to English football as the club seek further forward additions to replace the injured Leon Best, a move for Sporting Lisbon youngster Diogo Rosado also appears to be close according to Steve Kean. Possibly leaving Blackburn could be Scott Dann with the defender attracting interest from Premier League side Sunderland.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has been angered by in ‘illegal approach’ for star winger Matt Phillips and another midfielder attracting interests from a number of Premier League clubs is Ludovic Sylvestre. Following Emile Heskey’s rejection of a reported £90 per week basic wage offer Ian Holloway has also stated that a move for DJ Campbell is far from being completed.

Brian Stock has completed his move to Burnley from Doncaster, joining up with former team-mate Eddie Howe at the club as reported by us over two weeks ago.

In one of the biggest moves of the summer Craig Bellamy has joined Cardiff on a two year deal as reported by us earlier in the week. The Welshman joins on a free transfer following a compensation agreement with Liverpool but the transfer is not likely to signal and end to Malky Mackay’s summer spending. An initial approach for Nicky Maynard has been made but the price and demand from other clubs makes a deal unlikely, the manager’s main priority now will be defensive reinforcements following the sale of Anthony Gerrard to Huddersfield an likely departure of Darcy Blake with Malky drawing up a list of versatile defensive loan options from the Premier League rumoured to include Martin Kelly (now unlikely as is set to feature in Rodger’s plans) and Dedryck Boyata (also being tracked by a number of other clubs including Nottingham Forest). Cardiff may also make a move for former Portsmouth midfielder Liam Lawrence following the player’s agreement to leave the club with both Leeds and Nottingham Forest also interested.

Former Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu looks likely to join Ipswich with the club hoping to complete a move for the USA international soon, controversial midfielder Jimmy Bullard could be heading out of the club if there is a good enough offer for him.

El-Hadj Diouf has joined Leeds United on a non-contract basis, the move seems bizarre considering Warnock’s famous outburst at the player following the leg break of Jamie Mackie when he refused to label the forward a sewer rat as it would be insulting to the rats.

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of West Brom striker Simon Cox for a fee of £2,000,000 with confirmation coming from the club’s new owner on twitter.

Matt Jarvis joins the number of players who look to be heading out of Wolves as he has handed in a transfer request following West Ham’s bid for the winger being rejected, he has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs. The request comes after striker Steven Fletcher also demanded a move away from the club following a rejected offer from Sunderland, the listing of Adam Hammill and the announcement that Christophe Berra can leave the club. Polish international winger Slawomir Peszko has rejoined former manager Stale Solbakken at Wolves on loan from German side FC Cologne.
