From Gorseinon to Morriston and to Sketty and beyond, Swansea City have long been the pride of the Jack Army. Famed for producing some of the world’s leading footballing lights, the country is now home to a Brazilian branch of Swansea City fans.
A burgeoning supporters club has been set up in homage to Michael Laudrup’s men with a Twitter page @SwanseaCity_BR and an online blog at swanseacitybr.blogspot.co.uk. It says its ultimate aim is to become the established home of Swansea supporters living in Brazil.
It means the country synonymous with Pelé, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho could soon have new heroes in the shape of Joe Allen, Ashley Williams and Scott Sinclair.
And the club, whose eye-catching passing style has also been compared with the tiki-taka pass and move game employed by world champions Spain, said they were delighted with their growing international appeal.
Jonathan Wilsher, Swansea City spokesman, said the club had received plaudits from all over the world since making their debut in the Premier League last season.
He said: “The Swans went global last season under the bright lights of the Premier League. And because of the stylish way the team went about their business, the club received praise from all corners of the world.
“The messages of support that flooded in to the club from those fans worldwide were amazing and gave everyone a huge lift on and off the field.
“The latest fan club to emerge from Brazil, a country that knows a bit about football, shows how far the Swansea City message has spread.”
This summer the club has announced the signings of Dutchman Jonathan De Guzman, Spanish players José Manuel “Chico” Flores and Michu and has installed Danish boss Laudrup.
And Mr Wilsher said it might be an idea to invest in a Brazilian flair player to keep the club’s newest fanbase happy.
He said: “Hopefully the club’s popularity can keep on growing domestically and globally as we look to establish ourselves as a Premier League club for years to come.
“In the meantime, perhaps we’ll have to try and sign a Brazilian player next to capitalise on our growing fan-base in South America.”
