YOUNG Cardiff City striker Nat Jarvis might miss out on the chance to impress Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay – because of international duty, writes Terry Phillips.

Jarvis (pictured) spent most of last season on loan at Newport County having scored in Cardiff’s Carling Cup first-round win at Oxford United last August.

But the 20-year-old is now back at Cardiff and might have expected more first-team action in this season’s opening Capital One Cup tie at Northampton on August 14.

However, Cardiff-born Jarvis – who has resisted overtures from his grandfather’s Antigua to play for Wales – could now feature in the Uefa Under-21 Championship match against Armenia at Wrexham the following evening.

Mackay said: “Nat has waited a long time to play for his country and I would love to see him named in the squad against Armenia.

“That’s not my decision, of course, but Nat has worked manfully for a chance through sheer hard work and a fantastic attitude.

“I know all about waiting for a chance having made my Scotland debut at 32 – and I wish Nat all the best.”

Jarvis is currently in Switzerland at City’s pre-season training camp on the back of signing a new one-year deal.

The Oxford game is Jarvis’ solitary outing for Cardiff, but he did enjoy Football League experience at Southend in the 2010-11 season, making seven appearances.

Jarvis has joined fellow youngsters Kadeem Harris and Joe Ralls in City’s 20-man party in Switzerland – but Anthony Gerrard, Dekel Keinan and Solomon Taiwo have all stayed at home in the UK.

Midfielder Taiwo looks set to sign for League Two outfit Southend in the next few days.

New striker Etien Velikonja officially joins up with City after Champions League duty for his club NK Maribor, the Slovenian international due to line up against Zeljeznicar Sarajevo tonight.

Craig Conway is fully fit after the ankle and foot injuries he suffered last season and Mackay plans to put the squad through their paces before flying back from Geneva this weekend.
