Malky: Langston discussions will not affect Transfer Budget

Fri Jul 13, 2012 11:30 pm

Malky Mackay has insisted the debt deals behind the scenes at Cardiff City won’t affect his transfer budget either way.

Discussions between loan note creditors Langston and the Bluebirds’ hierarchy are still on-going, Malaysian backer Vincent Tan previously suggesting the full extent of his investment would not come until an agreement was thrashed out.

But now manager Mackay has insisted he has already been set his transfer budget as he looks to shape a new-look Cardiff squad.

Mackay has already made inroads into his recruitment plans after landing goalkeeper Joe Lewis, midfielder Jordon Mutch and striker Etien Velikonja – while Korean Kim Bo-Kyung and, of course, Craig Bellamy are being targeted.

And Mackay says he knows where he stands when it comes to his summer spending allowance, regardless of the drawn-out talks over debts.

Asked if the continued uncertainty over the Langston issue had hampered his transfer plans, Mackay said: “No. I have a budget that has been set and it is solely to do with my transfer activity.

“In terms of the business and financial side, our Malaysian owners work closely with Alan Whitely on that, as they do with many aspects of the club.

“But it’s separate to the money that is there for transfers.”

It comes after Tan’s proposed investment pledge – made in the wake of his controversial rebranding plans – claimed Mackay would be given a ‘war chest’ to make promotion a reality this term.

While the details of the financial package still remain unclear, Mackay has clearly been given the green light to spend this summer.

He has already broken his Cardiff spending record this summer after splashing out around £3m on Mutch and Slovenian Velikonja on top of Bosman signing Lewis compared to an estimated £2.3m spending in his first season.

Mackay has admitted there are more to come – as well as players to go out – as he continues to rebuild for a second crack at the Championship, Kim Bo-Kyung’s agent insisting a deal worth £2.3m would bring the 22-year-old midfielder to South Wales.

Yet any move for former loan star Bellamy would clearly change the picture.

Sources at Liverpool have so far indicated that they would require a fee for the 33-year-old – even if it is likely to be cut-price of around £2m comparted to his ability.

It is Bellamy’s wages that could eat into the money that Mackay has to spend elsewhere on his squad.

But the former Watford chief did say he would have no issues asking for extra assistance should the circumstances require it.

“The club is a business and we’ll run it as such,” said Mackay.

“I have my transfer budget like any manager, but if there comes a point when have to get my begging bowl and ask for a wee bit more... you don’t know if that has to happen or not.

“At the moment I have the budget and we’re working within it and I’ve always been respectful of the football club’s ability to allow me to go and spend money within our means.

“That doesn’t change. If something outside comes along, we’ll have the conversation.”

Mackay continues to refuse to be drawn on the subject of former Norwich team-mate Bellamy returning to his hometown club, reiterating his stance that it would be “disrespectful” to discuss the possibility of the Wales ace quitting Liverpool to drop back into the second tier.

And, although both labels could be attached to Bellamy, he insisted he is more concerned with getting good signings than big signings that could appease fans still disgruntled over the divisive switch to red.

“I need good players,” he said.

“Joe Mason wasn’t a big-name signing but look at the prospect he is.

“I could say the same for a few others we brought in last year.

“Sometimes big names cloud where they are in their career.

“But we do have to improve the squad and make sure the players we bring in come here to add to the group and to make us better quality.

“I’m constantly aware of that and it’s something I do realise we have to bring in better players.”

Mackay says his recruitment process is well ahead of schedule compared to his first season where major rebuilding work was required, and he added: “It’s an on-going process right through to August 31.

“But we’ve got plans in place and we’re ahead of where we were this time last year which is important.

“The recruitment team and the club acted as quickly as they could last year to get a squad to play that first game.

“But we were always playing catch-up as the season went on and eventually it turns.

“We know we need to change around some players – some will leave because they need to play – but there’s hopefully others that will come in to fill the gaps.

“But we do need a bigger squad and we certainly need more strength

"sometimes big names cloud where they are in their career"

If that isn't an indicator that Malky won't be bullied into giving
Craig Bellamy what he wants, then I don't know what is!!

Sign him by all means... But dont go breaking the bank on a
33yr old with a dodgy knee.

Football is a business.

Malky confirmed in the 3rd meeting I went to, " that he has been given his budget and it depended on nothing," was asked if he was happy, he said " yes, but of course any manager would like more, but I will be spending every penny of it. "

So after them stripping our identity from us and them giving Malky supposedly our biggest ever budget in our history, them saying its nothing but top 2 for Cardiff this coming season, Cardiff getting £100mill, surely we can not fail this season? After all we have sacrifiesed our identity for this.

Before anyone says no we managed to sve our club, wrong, Allan Whitley ha clearly stated on at least 5 occasions it was "never red or dead " and Malky/Tg have stated its top 2 for us.

I can not see us getting top 2 sorry we have to be real we have teams like Blackburn Wolves & Bolton will want to get back up straight away and are spending money themselves.

We have Birmingham Brighton and Blackpool having another go also we have Watford and Forest got their own money now.

Do not forget 3 good sides who are big clubs in their own right who have just been promoted Hudesfield a big stadium a big club and the other 2 sheff wed with Dave Jones who will want to show every one he can take a team to the prem after failing with us also Charlton not to be sniffed at.

This is going to be a hard season and top 2 is a very big ask whatever colour we are wearing I feel sorry for Malky as we have changed from a team that was building to a team that has to get promoted or else in one season

Blackburn, Wolves and Bolton need to rebuild. They were dreadful last season and would have been fighting a relegation battle if they were in the championship.

I cant see Birmingham being up there specially as they have had to get rid of players like Mutch. Brighton possible if they can be consistant while Blackpool I have a feeling might not be able to pockthemsleves up from losing in the play off final.

There is always a team that comes up that does well andyou would put yourmoney of the big club Sheff Wed until you see who the manager is.

This season looks a lot easier than last and as weconsolidated ourselves last season there isno reason with the right imports we can go all the wall. Considering what we have been asked to give up it us the least we can expect in return.

Forest and Watford might have new owners but name me one club that have done well from scratch when new bosses have appeared. It will take a couple of seasonds for those 2 tosort themselves out.
