Jordon Mutch Not Feeling The Weight Of His £2m transfer!

Thu Jul 12, 2012 11:55 pm

JORDON Mutch, Malky Mackay’s £2m record signing since he took charge of Cardiff City a year ago, won’t let that hefty price tag worry him.

Mackay has now signed 14 players for the Bluebirds, including latest capture Etien Velikonja, since he joined City and Mutch is the most expensive.

The 20-year-old Derby-born product was a schoolboy with his home-town club, while he was with Birmingham City for eight years, first as a trainee before progressing to senior professional.

He has progressed from promising young midfield player with Birmingham’s Blues to full-fledged Championship professional for the Bluebirds.

“I’m ready to deal with any change of perception around me and looking to improve myself every day, every time I walk onto the training ground,” says Mutch. “My aim is to impress and improve every time I play. That’s the challenge for me.

“As for the price tag, I’m just going out onto the pitch to do what I do and keep progressing towards where I want to be with Cardiff City.

“I didn’t think about leaving Birmingham City and went away on holiday after the end of the season. The two clubs agreed a fee and that was the start.

“As soon as the fee was agreed I was happy to sign for Cardiff.

“I have come here because of the manager, the fan base, a new stadium and the way this club is preparing for the new season. The owners are looking to put money in, invest in the team and that suits me down to the ground.

“The gaffer, Malky Mackay, was the biggest selling point for me. It’s essential to have a good working relationship with the manager. He has confidence in me and that was a massive factor for me.

“The size of this club was also important.

“I had been at Birmingham for five years and a change can be good for a player. I am really looking forward to the season to start.”

City were able to snap up Mutch for a bargain £2m fee thanks to Birmingham’s financial woes and Mutch believes Mackay will help him improve again, saying: “I changed completely as a player during my time under the gaffer at Watford.

“Those six months were the most enjoyable of my career at that stage because I was playing first-team football. I grew as a player, became stronger physically and matured. The improvement in every area of my game during that time was fantastic and that gave me such confidence.

“That experience played a big part in my decision to sign for Cardiff. I believe the manager can help me progress again and develop into a footballer capable of playing regularly at Premier level.”

Central midfield player Mutch scored nine goals in more than 80 first-team appearances and says: “I love moving forward to score goals, but I am also happy to get on the ball in a deeper position and start things off.

“I am really excited about playing alongside quality players like Peter Whittingham and Aron Gunnarsson. They, too, will help me develop and that suits me perfectly.

“I have played against Whitts, in particular, a few times.

“He was selected in the Championship team of the season and that says it all about his qualities.

“Aron is still only 22 and he has really made a name for himself in the Championship.

“There could be more signings coming, but the competition helps players. I can’t wait to get started and compete for a place in the team.”

Mutch has a range of passing which allows him to play in a holding role or link up with City’s forwards, just as both Whittingham and Gunnarsson did last season.

Birmingham City suffered the same fate as Cardiff last season. Both lost in the Championship play-off semi-finals. Mutch was in the Blues team as they lost against Blackpool over two legs, while Cardiff went down against West Ham.

“Overall, it was a successful season for me, but we were all down after failing to earn promotion,” says Mutch.

“I enjoyed my time at Birmingham and Chris Hughton helped me immensely. Now I have a new start with Malky Mackay and Cardiff City and want to push on even more.

“There is big ambition here in Cardiff and everybody here wants to take this club to the next stage and earn promotion after going close last season.”

Mutch had a taste of Premier football with Birmingham, making his debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and is an England Under-21 international midfield player tipped for a big future.

“Jordon is highly talented, a top player with great potential for a big career which we hope to see him fulfil with us here at Cardiff City,” said Mackay.

Mutch, who has also played Championship football on loan for Doncaster and Watford, will be in the Cardiff squad for their week-long training camp in Nyon, Switzerland, next week.

“That’s going to be a new experience and I can’t wait,” he said.

“I know Don Cowie and Andrew Taylor from my time at Watford, while I’ve been getting to know the other lads this week.

“I’ve enjoyed these first couple of days with the lads out on the Vale of Glamorgan training pitch and I’ve been made to feel very welcome. “

Mutch is one of three new signings this summer, along with goalkeeper Joe Lewis and striker Etien Velikonja.

Now Mackay is intent on adding more strength in depth to a squad which was far too thin in 2011-12.

“I have a budget and intend spending the money available to me,” says Mackay. “This has already been a busy summer and at this early stage in July I think we are as happy as we can be with the work we’ve done.

“I’d love to have all my players in for the first day of pre-season training, but that never happens.

“What is pleasing, though, is that we have solid plans in place and are certainly ahead of where we were at this stage 12 months ago.

“More players will come in and some players will leave the club as well as they need to be playing regular first-team football.”
