Arsenal Fans Sabotage Facebook Vote!

Arsenal fans sabotage Facebook vote to ensure Sol Campbell bags a spot in Tottenham’s all-time Prem XI!

Even during the summer, the north London rivalry between Spurs and Arsenal doesn’t let up.

Tottenham launched an initiative last week on their official Facebook and Twitter pages to find out from their fans who would be in their all-time Premier League XI.

All was going to plan for the best Spurs XI of the last 20 years with Paul Robinson, Kyle Walker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto filling up the first three spots in the side.

On Thursday Tottenham produced their list of centre backs to choose from, with some familiar names including Ledley King, Gary Mabbut and perhaps the most hated player in Spurs’ history: Sol Campbell.

It didn’t take long for Arsenal fans to realise that Campbell, who they signed on a free transfer in the summer of 2001 and enjoyed plenty of success and trophies in the red half of north London, was included in the shortlist and a Twitter campaign quickly ensured he got the requisite votes.

The following day, the official Spurs website announced the results: “Ledley King won Thursday’s poll with 41.04% of the vote as we put together our central defensive pairing. He is partnered by Sol Campbell who, after a slow start in the vote, gathered pace (with a little help from across North London…) to finish second with 37.89%, ahead of Gary Mabbutt on 10.51%. So we have two Spurs home-grown players at centre-half.”

There had been talk that Tottenham had pulled the poll due to Arsenal fans sabotaging it with a mass vote but kudos to Spurs for trying to make the best out of a bad situation.

See Sol Campbell explain his transfer from Tottenham to Arsenal and the subsequent abuse he received, in September 2011 on Goals on Sunday.
