CITY IN TALKS WITH FOOTBALL LEAGUE OVER ASIA TV PROPOSAL

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=84839 :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

THE Football League have confirmed they are in talks about boosting Cardiff City’s television profile in Malaysia.

The Bluebirds are understood to be in discussions with league officials over a ground-breaking deal that would see Championship games involving Malky Mackay’s men beamed live to south-east Asia.

The proposals would not see the club rake in extra cash from having fixtures available to broadcasters in Malaysia and neighbouring countries, the homeland of club owner Vincent Tan.

Instead, it is a bold attempt to boost the club’s profile overseas as part of the first signs of the business strategy behind controversial re-branding plans.

Fans have been split over the decision by Tan to ditch the club’s traditional blue colours and Bluebird badge for red and a dragon, partly over its cultural significance in Asia.

Questions have been raised over the financial acumen behind such a move given Cardiff’s relative low-standing overseas compared to Premier League clubs, regardless of their tie-ins with Malaysia through billionaire Tan.

But the plans – if successful – would enable the club to make more of sponsorship and marketing opportunities by reaching a greater TV audience in Asia. Cardiff are remaining tight-lipped on the details with the deal not yet signed and sealed.

But the Football League has confirmed they are in talks to see if they can push through the innovative plans, admitting: “We are currently discussing the issue with our international broadcast partners.”

The plans are understood to be based on Cardiff arranging the filming of their games to be screened live overseas, outside of the normal Sky and BBC based productions.

It would form an additional feature to the package sold to varying overseas markets – featuring 96 countries outside of the UK including Malaysia – by the Football League’s global sports marketing partners, Pitch.

Any extra revenue would not go to Cardiff, but be divided among the Football League clubs as per the current collective bargaining agreement where all clubs receive a split of a central cash pot.

It is understood there is no plan to abandon that agreement – in the first of a five-year deal – and there is no desire to undermine it through Cardiff’s proposals.

But both the league and Cardiff are understood to be keen on the thought of boosting the profile of the club and the league as whole.

In turn, Cardiff would theoretically be in a stronger position to negotiate future sponsorship – shirt and pitchside – deals as well as further marketing knock-ons to give strained income streams a much needed boost.

The club have admitted that, despite the proposed investment package from owner Tan as part of the re-branding, there is a clear need to generate new revenue to stem losses the club have admitted total around £1m a month.

Furthermore, the club are aware that new money-making avenues must be explored regardless of Tan’s support with Financial Fair Play measures looming.

"The proposals would not see the club rake in extra cash from having fixtures available to broadcasters in Malaysia and neighbouring countries, the homeland of club owner Vincent Tan."

So the deal wouldn't bring in any cash then, just spreading the 'Cardiff City' word, no guarantee that millions will watch us?

I've had an idea that tv was part of VT's plans for a while. We will not no his plans exactly but this would make sense, I wouldnt be surprised if he is looking to copy sky in some ways himself, with maybe pay per view or exclusive channels. He seems to take western ideas to Aisia, like KFC and McDonalds.

Time will tell but I don't think we should underestimate his business sense, he knows that Market inside out and how to make money over there, whether it is from tv or advertising, he will make money ...

Yes it would, if you read it properly it says that stadium sponsorship could increase with our profile being raised due to live games being shown in asia!!!

So it's not the actual TV deal but just the sponsorships?

Any profits made from tv viewing overseas goes into the football leagye "pot" to be shared between all teams, cardiff city have said we will put our profits into the pot to be shared as well, (there would be no chance of getting this passed if we wanted to keep any profits) where we hope to cash is is with advertising, with the showing of us on asian tv live every week our profile grows, who knows where it could lead to??? stadium naming rights or even new major investers.

Re-read the article. Any profits are divided amongst all FL clubs.

Now you are getting the hang of it. We would be Asia's football equivelent of ITV. We offer a product free (Championship football) on telly and make money from the commercials (in this case pitch side hoardens, stadium naming rights, shirt sponsorship etc)

I know we have them now but the exposure will mean that we receive far more revenue for the same products.

Sounds like you are still stuck in the 1970's  (these posts about how long someone has supported CCFC are getting really boring)

To address your point we will be an addition to Premier League games and not a direct competitor.

The viewing numbers will be low to start with obviously, but there is bound to be intrigue as CCFC is partly owned by Malaysia's version of Richard Branson and that has to pay off in the long term.

can you name any business decision tht is 100% garenteed. if we spent 100 million on players this year there is no garentee tht wed get promoted. this is just a way to widen our exposure and increase brand awareness. If cardiff games are showed out there every week then there is a chance tht many of these people will form a bond with the club. Whilst yes malasian people can simply watch man utd, but how do we know how this is set out, to watch man utd, but like most people who enjoy football u dont only watch the best teams.

Whatever the ins and outs of this (and none of us know)... This HAS to be
seen as a hugely positive move.

Cardiff City, owned by a Malaysian, live on Malaysian TV fighting the good
fight in its quest for Premiership Football...

Why not?

A 3pm kick off would finish at 2am Malaysian time. Hardly something to keep the red shirted kids awake for?

Let's be honest, if this is VT's master plan to turn our fortunes around and plug our £15m-a-year debt, then we're in trouble!

Are you sure? :? 3pm kick-off here is 10pm in KL (7hours ahead).

90 minutes for playing time and 15 minutes for half-time means a finish time of 11:45pm ish.
