What it's like being a "real" Cardiff fan

Thu Jun 28, 2012 11:23 am

Talking in work about away days, I pipe up, my best away day was Wimbledon away, Hartson played, we gave him stick all game, he missed a pen and got taken off. We didn't stop singing all game and supported the boys til the end..........my boss asks, "City won then yeah". No I think we lost 4-1 I replied..........................

That is what being a Cardiff fan is about, it's not about success, it's not about selling our souls for a chance of the Premiership, it's about supporting the team, embracing the history and loving the fact we are the Bluebirds, play in blue and have the best damn badge in football!

It's not about being bent over a barrel and royaly f.ucked up the arse by some foreigner who hasn't a clue about football but likes the colour red!

You can try and dress it up whatever way you want but the people who are in the red camp are selling the soul of our club for success and that is the bottom line!

making sure you got the latest man united shirt with "rooney" in big white letters on the back. having a red devils cup and keyring. sky tv with all the sports channels. the latest app to keep you up to date with all the goings on inside old trafford and a big signed poster of the 99 treble winning team on your bedroom wall...oh, and a pet dog called cantona.

And that is one game that you remember probably for the Hartson factor. There have been plenty of other 4-1 away defeats (& home ones for that matter) where the memory was not so pleasant.

Success has ALWAYS been part of football that has never changed and never will.

So its not about purchasing a season ticket or match day tickets then ?

You must have been involved in "proper nawty" away days in the 90's

Re: What it's like being a "real" Cardiff fan

One of my best days out involved a 3-0 thrashing by Maidstone United in Dartford. From a football perspective it couldn't get much lower. It was like they used to do in the forces, put you all through the shit together, like bull-nights where you're all scrubbing your block when there're a million other things you'd rather be doing and you come out the other side a closer knit unit. Success is not a determining factor in terms of supporting your team, (or at least shouldn't be), much more important is the identity and feel of the club and its fans.

Now all I hear is 'wait 'til we are in the premiership and you'll all come sneaking back in', to anyone who feels strongly enough to boycott the CCS due to the change of our colour, sorry, not a pre-requisite to enjoying the football experience. You can't miss what you never had. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the good days and promotion parties more than anything else, maybe the negative days make them even sweeter, maybe Man Utd fans enjoy winning each title just as much despite it being a regular occurrence, how would we know? Do we even care?

Another thread was talking about favourite away goals and someone posted Jimmy Gilligan's winner in Bath against Bristol Rovers, the date is imprinted on my memory, Feb4 1989. Cardiff's first away win all season and Bristol Rovers first home defeat if my memory serves. They didn't like it and I took the brunt of their annoyance at Bath station 'cos like an idiot I got back to the station after the Cardiff escort had left for home. All subsequent Cardiff trains passed through Temple Meads on the way home. 2+2 equalled 4. You win some, you lose some but above all you keep your identity.

I get all of the above as you well know mate, especially about the sticking together when in the forces.
The fact of the matter when in the forces though, was that we were all small cogs in a much bigger wheel, there for a greater cause. The greater cause was always what you were aiming to support.
Then, as now, I see the same thing only the greater cause for me is to stick by the team. NO MATTER WHAT.
The forces have gone through many changes, regiments re-branded and amalgamated with others etc.
The one constant though is the greater cause.
In this case, for me it's CCFC.
I know we all have differences and different ideals. I believe we will not lose our identity. (we will have blue back one day)
and this will be another small chapter that is Cardiff City.
So in the mean time, to quote another military saying... YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!

Pick and shovel. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

What I don't get with this argument is why did you stop because there are so many stating it was better yesteryear, and you are so loyal, why don't the 500 that went to Wimbledon that day still make that noise, because none of you have left the gang have you ?

Ely boy this is not a dig at you personally, I was there during the 80's, I get it, but it has gone from football, Cardiff (NP) may well have been the last bastions of the old days. I think you are angry at the wrong people.

As much as i agree that the premiership is not the be all and end all, you have to show ambition for your club , not only to be playing against the best teams but simply because we need to be finacially stable. yes id still support cardiff if we win loose no matter what devision but i want a club tht is going to survive and my kids can watch.Sucess helps tht happen.

That is what being a Cardiff fan is about, it's not about success,
Sorry Simon, but thats RUBBISH IMO! Supporting a football team is ALL about success - no matter what division you are in you want to win and be the best and storm the league! Don't tell me that you were happy to go to a game and lose and not moan about your team when they were playing shit - but as long as you all had a good sing song you were ok with coming away with a loss! Because that just sounds stupid to me!

it's not about selling our souls for a chance of the Premiership Nobody is selling anything because we don't have a choice - the rebrand was going to happen whether you liked it or not! The board would never turn down that kind of investment!,

it's about supporting the team - Which we will continue to do? The players are only doing their job, its their uniform!,
embracing the history - Which will always be? You can't erase history it will always be there?

and loving the fact we are the Bluebirds - Nothing will change up in the stands, Still wear blue, still sing the same songs? play in blue and have the best damn badge in football! (Well that obviously is something that we can't do anything about, and your comment about the badge is Debatable or a matter of opinion!)

It's not about being bent over a barrel and royaly f.ucked up the arse by some foreigner who hasn't a clue about football but likes the colour red!

You can try and dress it up whatever way you want but the people who are in the red camp are selling the soul of our club for success and that is the bottom line!

F.UCK MODERN FOOTBALL AND F.UCK MODERN FOOTBALL FANS!

Just to reiterate, I am totally against the Change of colour to Red at home, the badge doesn't hurt me as much as the colour, but there are no other viable options, If we stayed blue - what do you suggest to raise income to be able to run, pay off historic debt, and fund the manager for players as well as paying the players wages? we are already (allegedly) up to £80m in debt!! So I think it is best if we all just grow up a little accept the fact that Cardiff City would probably end up in either administration or more likely liquidation with out Tans Investment regardless of your opinion of him! I am dreading cheering a red team on to the pitch come August 17th! But I have learnt to put up and shut up and get on with it. The past is the past - we can not time travel back to the DARK DAYS in the DUNGEON leagues as we are reminded of so often?

It's all about moving forward as a team, club and group and seek the success we deserve.... Because for the life of me I don't understand why any fan WOULDN'T want to be successfully promoted to the premier league. What's the point in supporting a football team if its not about success?

And then who knows, after a VERY poor season of merchandise sales (If people stick to their guns and refuse to purchase the new rebranded merchandise) and the fact that we COULD possibly be promoted - the chance of reverting back to blue will always be an option....

We can all debate, discuss, argue chat about the rebrand until we are Blue in the face (Pardon the pun  ) It isn't going to change anything..... Will you still go to the stadium to support your home city, will you show your faith in the players? the same faith you had in them last season? Will you continue to back Malky, who probably has the most potential as a manager as we have seen down here in years? Will you continue to unite with your friends and fellow supporters on match day? Because as far as i'm concerned my opinion is that nothing will change for me. I will continue to support my home city club as I have since 1992..... Just have to endure them wearing a temporary colour.... because I think its fair to say with the amount of years this club has played in blue - at some stage, it will be used as a tool at some point in the future to RE-UNITE all the fans and bring us back onside.

you without a doubt are an idiot I'm only 17 but I know what it takes to be a REAL Cardiff fan just like the original poster stated my favorite away game was Newcastle away when we lost 5-1 It's not about winning It's about supporting your local club thru out the match no matter the result, it's about being there at every home game suppoting the boys and the manager,it's about respecting our traditions and knowing you are watching a team and doing the same chants as your grandfather and great grandfather were chanting.f**k the move to Red I may have only been very young at the time but I was there when we were in league 2, I can remember us beating Leeds at ninian park and can honestly say I would rather be back in league 2 wearing Blue than being top of the prem in red.thats what being a real cardiff fan is about not your age but your passion for the club

Re: What it's like being a "real" Cardiff fan

Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:43 pm

I agree with the OP's sentiments but unfortunately in modern football money MATTERS, it's a business now. Which is why some fans want Premier League. Securing Premier League status should save the club. I quite frankly, couldn't give a f**k which league we are in, as long as we are still around then thats fine.

"I know we all have differences and different ideals. I believe we will not lose our identity. (we will have blue back one day)"

Identity? With the rebranding we already have lost it. But we will shortly feel part of things because sooner rather than later we'll be back to our traditional colour and crest.

No we don't, not the identity these guys are talking about, it was borderline before the rebrand. If we trawl through the pre rebrand posts I bet the same guys were moaning about the stadium and wanted to swap the Canton and Grange.
