Jason Perry - Bellamy Won't Guarantee Premier League!

Tue Jun 26, 2012 11:55 pm

CARDIFF CITY legend Jason Perry has warned the Bluebirds won’t be getting a passport to the Premier League... even if Craig Bellamy joins them.

Speculation has been mounting that the 32-year-old Bellamy could be set to return to his home-town club from lIverpool.

Bellamy spent the 2010-11 season at Cardiff after arriving on loan from then-club Manchester City.

The Bluebirds under manager Dave Jones missed out on promotion and Bellamy has always insisted he believes he has unfinished business in the Welsh capital.

After arriving at Anfield on a free transfer last summer the frontman has a year left on his current deal with the Reds.

But his future is unclear with former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers, the new Liverpool manager, yet to show his hand when it comes to the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Cardiff’s Malaysian backers are interested in bringing Bellamy back if a financial package can be brokered although £2m might be enough to secure Bellamy’s services if he does leave Anfield.

Bur former Cardiff captain Perry urged caution when it came to supporter’s expectations if their home town idol were to return.

Perry, who made 344 appearances for the Bluebirds in a decade at the club, believes Cardiff boss Malky Mackay would need a big injection of talent to get the best from the returning Bellamy.

“You know when you sign Craig you are going to get a top quality player,” said Perry.

“He’s a fantastic talent, skilful, with an incredible work rate and a very positive mental attitude.

“We know Craig is a strong personality in the dressing room. My question mark over the whole thing is, how will the current crop of Cardiff players react to that.

“Even if you forget the matter of the wages he would probably be on in comparison, it takes a lot to stand up to a person like Craig and the high standards he demands.

“And Malky builds his whole team ethic on harmony within the squad.

“I actually think when he was first here there were more senior players with the confidence to deal with that. The likes of Jay Bothroyd and Michael Chopra.

“ Under Mackay there’s a lot of very talented younger players there and you wonder how they would react. It’s hard to say no and even pick out the right pass at times because the view is to give it to Craig.

“But the most important thing is that Cardiff would need to bring in higher quality players. That’s the only way you are going to get the best from Craig if he does drop down.

“He sees runs and opportunities a lot of players are never going to see so who is going to provide the service?”

Indeed Perry believes if Mackay can tempt Bellamy back it would not be that marquee signing which would be most important, but the ones which were to follow.

“Craig Bellamy alone is no guarantee of promotion, as demonstrated last time he was here,” continued Perry.

“He can’t do it alone whatever his talents. There’s nothing automatic about it.

“ Mackay has got some good players, but, for me, not enough to bring out the very best of what Craig has to offer.

“If Craig does return that’s great, but it is the next four or five signings that Cardiff make which are vital because that is what it will take.

“Players with the talent and vision to get the best out of Craig would be required, then you start looking at a real possibility of the club reaching the Premier League.”

Swans were playing Liverpool away at Anfield last season, about 10 minutes left and he's warming up. There were a good few Swans fans booing him and all I could think was " this is gonna bite us on the arse!". As it goes, it finished 0-0 but I watched those last few minutes wincing.

If you get him, and he stays relatively injury free, you are right in the hunt next season.
