Craig Bellamy's Departure Would Be No Loss To Liverpool?

Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:56 pm

Craig Bellamy could find himself with a new club once he returns from Olympic duty. According to the Daily Mail, Cardiff City are interested in re-signing the 32-year-old after an impressive loan spell at the club during the 2010/2011 season.

Despite many believing that he was playing below his level, Bellamy thoroughly enjoyed his time at Cardiff and would most likely be interested in a return to the club. The hiring of former teammate and friend Malky Mackay would only heighten such interest in luring Bellamy back to his hometown club.

Cardiff will hope to develop on a season that saw them qualify for the playoffs yet fail to reach the Wembley final. For Bellamy, the chance to play underneath a close friend and help his hometown side to Premier League promotion may be too good an opportunity to pass up. At 32, it’s certainly one that he will not likely get again.

Yet there is a minor technicality. The Welshman still has a year left on his Liverpool deal, which therefore begs the question should Liverpool let him go? With Rodgers bringing a new style of play and looking to stamp his own authority on the squad, perhaps ridding the team of certain Dalglish purchases may be to his benefit.

Realistically Bellamy’s best days are behind him, a fact shown by his form this last season for Liverpool. Despite being effective on multiple occasions the striker only scored 6 goals in 27 appearances, most of which came off the bench. The Welshman still has pace to burn yet his age is showing in his ability to last a full 90 minutes, something which may help Liverpool to consider his departure.

It seems now that the time is right for Bellamy to move on. Obviously for Bellamy, if the transfer goes through, this is somewhat of a dream. For Liverpool, it makes more sense to see the striker depart whilst they can still obtain some compensation for him as opposed to the Welshman leaving next summer on a free transfer.

Craig Bellamy has been a reliable servant for Liverpool football club and has enjoyed two spells with the team (apart from his run in with John Arne Riise and a putter). Yet the time is for him to move on. His place is only minimal at Anfield and with an opportunity to return to his home, play for his boyhood club and hopefully steer them into the Premier League he would be daft not to leave Merseyside.

It seems that one of football’s journeymen has one more journey left in him.

Strange how most Liverpool fans were raving over him for many months last yera --then they are the most fickle fans around--
Id prefer Bellamy to Downing any day--
