" Cardiff City must now deliver promotion "

By Paul Abbandonato Jun 9th 2012

RED shirts, red faces of rage amongst the section of Cardiff City fans who remain vehemently opposed to the Bluebirds’ change of colour.

It is fair to say nothing has divided support of the football club in its 113-year history quite as much as the rebranding issue.

The disquiet from what is still a large number of supporters will have filtered across the globe towards Malaysia.

But there won’t be any going back and the Bluebirds’ billionaire owner Vincent Tan knows there can be only one way to win over the critics.

To deliver the Premier League dream, and fast, a goal which is synonymous with his plans to push the Bluebirds’ brand in the Asian market anyway.

Tan, it seems, is putting his money where his mouth is and that will mean a whole new pressure being heaped upon Malky Mackay for the 2012-13 campaign.

Not only does Mackay need to bring in the right players, with the “substantial funding” we are assured he will be handed in the summer transfer market, he also needs to get them gelling quickly and the team up and running from the off.

The worst case scenario, the Malaysians will know, will be for the team to be playing in red and also flop as a side.

Expectations will be huge in the coming months, but surely that very different type of pressure is better for Mackay than the one he dealt with on first coming to the club, when he had to scrape around to find enough players just to make up a team.

Logic says that if Mackay was good enough to get a patched-up team punching above its weight and into the play-offs last season, then he should be able to go one better with superior players and deliver automatic promotion next time around.

That will be the theory from the Malaysians, anyway. The problem, and Mackay will know this better than anyone out in the Far East, is that football is not an exact science.

If it were, the star-studded City team of 2010-11, which contained the firepower of Craig Bellamy, Jay Bothroyd and Michael Chopra, backed up at various points by the finesse of Aaron Ramsey, Peter Whittingham and Jason Koumas, the directness of Chris Burke and the physical presence of Seyi Olofinjana, would have gone up at a canter.

Football, reliant upon 11 individuals on a pitch, sensible team selection from a manager and correct decisions from referees who can be influenced by fanatical home support, is very different to any other business.

I’m told, for example, Tan doesn’t necessarily have an out-and-out business plan for his red shirts revolution. What he possesses is a vision, one which has worked very well with his other business interests, so he anticipates it will with the Bluebirds’ colour change, too.

Central to everything, though, remains Cardiff reaching the Premier League and Mackay knows he needs to put together a team capable of getting over that elusive promotion line.

If Dave Jones’ star-studded Class of 2010-11 were top heavy with forwards and artistic midfield men, thus lacking proper balance, at least Mackay can plan from more solid foundations.

His back five for the coming season does not need tinkering, although many will believe it is time to give Darcy Blake a regular starting spot at right-back and move Kevin McNaughton to the left where he can vie for a position with Andrew Taylor.

Marshall, Blake, Hudson, Turner, McNaughton... it’s a rearguard most managers in the Championship would take.

It is further forward where Mackay needs to bolster by bringing in the marquee signings the fans are expecting, quality players who can provide the spark and invention missing in the team last season.

I maintain that given the hand he was dealt, the Bluebirds over-achieved under Mackay last season. They built their success upon organisation, defensive discipline and a work ethic which meant every single player gave every single last drop of sweat right up to the 94th minute of matches.

But when the business end of the season kicked in, City lacked real guile, creativity and pace going forward, particularly in the wide areas.

Cardiff need two men of real quality in those positions, similar, dare I say it, to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer, who helped take arch-rivals Swansea up into the top flight.

If those wide men can score goals too, that will be a bonus. That type of player costs a lot of money, but the Bluebirds have that at their disposal following the rebranding.

Even further forward, much as I believe Kenny Miller is a super player, Mackay needs a banker 25-goal-a-season striker. Which is why, I guess, he went after Burnley hotshot Jay Rodriguez.

That move is over, with Rodriguez opting for the Premier League with Southampton, but expect further transfer market movement from Mackay for a goal-getter in the coming weeks.

Much as Cardiff fans adore the silkiness of Peter Whittingham, something is lacking in the midfield area, too.

The Bluebirds need a been there, seen it, worn the t-shirt threadbare warrior to boss matches. A bit like the West Ham duo of Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble did three times to City in the season just gone, or the way old Scottish war-horse Barry Ferguson managed in helping Blackpool triumph down here.

A dominant midfield man like that, who can help make play and break up opposition moves, could free up Whittingham to cause more havoc in and around the opposition penalty box.

If the money the Malaysians are ready to invest does bring in four quality players in the positions I outline above, then Cardiff really could become a promotion force to be reckoned with.

Particularly as Mackay has clearly already instilled the type of team spirit into his Bluebirds which recently-promoted sides such as Reading, Southampton, Norwich and Swansea possessed in abundance.

Reading lost their two best players last summer, goal ace Shane Long and skipper and defensive lynchpin Matt Mills, yet still managed to regroup to win the league.

Southampton joined them in the top two because of the goals of Ricky Lambert and Billy Sharp, coupled with the creative flair of Adam Lallana.

West Ham prevailed via the play-offs because of their Nolan-Noble led strong midfield, coupled with the goal threat of Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te.

Each of those promoted teams possessed a fine goalkeeper and a solid back four, an area the Bluebirds can also be happy with going forward.

As Mackay looks to back up that defensive efficiency with some offensive stardust, he must know promotion is up for grabs.

Of the three relegated teams. Bolton and Blackburn have clear problems, while Wolves will be under the stewardship of Stale Solbakken, their new Norwegian manager who knows little about the Championship.

Of the promoted teams, only Sheffield Wednesday realistically look capable of challenging again in 2012-13.

Birmingham have financial issues and have lost their manager Chris Hughton. Blackpool’s Ian Holloway is being linked with Swansea and their star player, Matt Phillips, seems Premier League bound, although if he’d like to come to Cardiff, Mackay would willingly have him.

Leicester, who punched way below their weight under Sven Goran Eriksson and Nigel Pearson, will surely be leading contenders next time around.

It seems inconceivable a shrewd old cookie like Neil Warnock will not be able to turn Leeds around, while Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest will each be looking for better things.

However, already the Championship 2012-13 is looking like an open race, giving the Bluebirds, red birds or whatever you wish to call them, a real opportunity to seize the day.

With the right signings, it really could be Cardiff’s year at last.

For many supporters it has to be, to ensure there aren’t more red faces to go with the red shirts.

Big pressure on Malky that's for sure. He demanded and got 110% effort from the players last season and as fans that's all we can ask of the team.
Let's hope the players we bring in over the summer can add the extra quality that is necessary to at last get us to the Premier league. As we known those qualities don't come cheap and I just hope Malky has been given he necessary funds.
One thing for sure it's going to be a very interesting summer and if we ever need reminding the last few weeks have if anything proved it's never dull moment being a City fan.

For me, the one thing that remains no matter what happens to this Club, is the seemingly never ending rollercoaster ride of emotions that goes with following City. There is never a dull moment, we experience tremendous highs and more often than not, desperate lows. We just keep on coming back for more, just like an addict.Would we want to have it any other way?

Cardiff City must deliver a Debt free club as promised. When that is achieved everything else will fall into place.

Promotion is not and never has been the main goal here.

The main thing is to get the club financially stable - then I firmly believe we will get promotion.

There'e no pressure on this season though, unless we try and put it on to the club ourselves.

I do however believe we will be in with a very good chance of promotion within the next 2 seasons :ayatollah:

We will not have the income without the promotion though. Time to stop talking the talk and back Malky to the hilt.

Re: " Cardiff City must now deliver promotion "

You may find it easier to get promotion, Wolves, Bolton and Blackburn are no great shakes and you've lost West Ham, Reading and Southampton out of the division. The rest are much of a muchness, there's no reason Cardiff can't at the very least get into the play-offs and possibly with any investment go one better.

Re: " Cardiff City must now deliver promotion "

Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:19 am

If we don't go up and don't get the players we need to get there I for one will be shouting from the rooftops on here saying WTF was the red all about then. I just can not see it, just like last season and the season before it, jan come sat in 2nd spot knowing we need faces and nothing so I guess we go with a dead start and live in hope like the last two season we have been told we will have a budget to get us up but never see it on the pitch where it matters. The cringeworthy media links to players are getting silly from the club which I know there doing it. Untill I see it on the pitch then I will believe it.

Well there was no better time that last jan to do that with are position so it does make you wonder, as one min we are told we might now survive two weeks after the 1st meeting on the rebrand and the same week are are supposed to be bidding 5million bucks for a player its a f*cking circus down there.

Why must city deliver promotion? Lets hope the anti brandind section most of who wont go again apparently dont try and put pressure on malky and the owners to win promotion just to cause more unrest.

Well let's sit in this league then and let the 15-20million grow every season then. That way tan can sell shirts to his mates and close family come on think about it.

So you think the people who didn't want the rebrand do not want us to go up. People are talking about this rebrand in terms of vs it and for it but I'm amazed why its even classed that. The malaysians was doing this before any daft internet polls vs the rebrand or any polls. For the rebrand if that's there excuse for changing there minds people must be sniffing to much glue to belive this, with or without us they was doing this as the RED shirts was on order with the dragon on way before the 1st leak online about the whole rebrand. I carnt see how anyone had a choice or say in anything when its been dropped on and that's that. Nevermind there's a promise of players for promotion but we had that old chestnut and will have to listen to it again for the third season running. :ayatollah:

Get the club financialy stable?

How many years have the Malayians been here now? 4th Year, and how have they stabalised the debt?

By watching it grown by another £30 million?

If Im way off with the figures then I will bow down to those that have more info than me, but
you have to ask yourself what on earth have they been doing for the past 3/4 years.

They've only been here 2 years and have put in more than £40 million to keep us going, whilst sorting out historic debt and taking nothing out! :ayatollah:

Yeah your right, sorry fella, got myself confused then over the years.

I still question what they have been doing for the past 2 years though.

Few things though, they havnt sorted out any historic debt have they? still in debt to PMG, Ray Ranson, and Langstone.

They may have put £40 million pound in but people make out like they are giving it to us, its all debt, and thats where this £80million figure comes from, half is owed back to the Malaysians.

What exactly have they done to move this club forward in the past 2 years, as it seems to me we have not progressed on or off
the pitch since the Blackpool Play Off defeat season.

The Malaysians are full of shit. Proven liars. Does anyone remember the second half of the season? 3rd in January. When will we ever get a better chance to get to the Premier League that the last three seasons. Did they get in a couple of quality players? Exactly.

Fair points

Forget all this £100 million investment, if they had given Jones £5-6 million January before lasy, or Malky £5-6 million January just
gone we could have gone up either season but they failed to back their managers and we missed out by a whisker.

It doesnt make sense.

Well let's sit in this league then and let the 15-20million grow every season then. That way tan can sell shirts to his mates and close family come on think about it.

Of course cardiff need promotion so do other clubs thats obvious but some would like us to mess it up because they dont agree with the rebranding etc

:ayatollah:

Bluebird1977 for crying out loud give it a rest you're boring the bollox off people with your perpetual whinging and moaning. Your like a prophet of doom!! You should change your Username to Victor Meldrew!
Get behind the manager and players and see what happens next season. Start bumping your gums when it has failed ... not before cos you have no credibility just whinging without a fact to rely on.

Exactly how I feel.

They're clearly trying to sort out the historic debt and as soon as Langston's (Sam Hammam) debt is sorted, then the plan appears to be to sort out PMG & Ranson afterwards, before turning all the debt into shares and therefore equity!

I'd have to argue about the on pitch matters though, as they invested heavily in loan players during the 2010-2011 season, obviously in an effort to attain Premier league status, but once our season ended with defeat at home to Reading, all these big names returned to their clubs and a couple of other big hitters in Bothroyd and Burkey walked away on frees!

I'd also have to say, that whilst we didn't have too many names amongst our team last season, they certainly fought above their weights, providing us with another great day out at Wembley! The big bonus to me however, is that the vast majority of the current squad are tied up in contracts and are therefore assets to Cardiff City!

A few more decent signings over the next few weeks and last season's squad, along with the new acquisitions, should be able to push us a little bit closer to where the majority of us we want to be! :ayatollah:
