Saints march in: Southampton agree fee for Burnley's Rodriguez

Premier League new boys are trying to settle personal terms with the England Under-21 striker after Clarets accept their offer

Hot Rod: Southampton's move for the Burnley starlet could send Chaplow 'home'
Southampton are in talks with Burnley’s England Under-21 striker Jay Rodriguez about a record-breaking £6.5million deal.

Saints supremo Nicola Cortese is trying to thrash out terms with Rodriguez’s advisers after agreeing a fee for the young Championship hitman.

Rodriguez will also need to be persuaded to join the Premier League new boys after more established clubs watched him last season - but Saints hope that he says ‘yes.’

The fee is the most Southampton have paid by a distance and includes extra money for appearances and achievements - with a possible swap to be arranged too.

Saints are ready to part with Burnley old boy Richard Chaplow, and Clarets boss Eddie Howe is interested in bringing the midfield dynamo - began his career as a kid at Turf Moor - 'home'.

Cardiff were leading the bidding at £5.5m in straight cash, but Rodriguez does not want to stay in the Championship and Saints have now topped that anyway.

Welcome to him. At least it will end our speculation as it was never going to happen. Wake me up when a player is at the CCS holding a City scarf above his head and saying what a huge club we are :ayatollah:

If that 5M actually exists? I think the club are deliberately bidding under the asking price to seem as if they are trying to sign players :old: :old:

The Malaysians have money that's for sure but I feel as if they DO NOT WANT TO sign players for our club. They are using it as a vehicle to perform evil things with, I have no idea what.

If only Canton Magic was around to explain it ..... :old: :old:

If you were VT would you spend £5M of your hard earned cash on a single player after recent events. I would not. I would be taking a step backwards, looking in the mirror and thinking I have to move staff on at the club I own, there are too many people at Cardiff City who can not run a business but can leak information.

FFS do you really think one of the best business men around (VT) would want himself to look a mug by offering money he did not have, how many people on this board actually have common sense?

You pay the fee what the market dictates otherwise we going to get nothing but cheapies & freebies, which in all honesty I think will happen anyway.

We need to be ahead of the market, taking gambles on youngsters for a million not gambling premier league transfers for a championship player. Shane long cost £4.5 million last year, Did J Rod play against us last season, I remember watching Vas Te

Jacks are apparently after Giovani Dos Santos on loan from Spurs. In the right team he would get goals. Would be nice if we could throw a cheeky bid in for him and gazump them

Re: " Jay Rodriguez "

Could be a gamble sighning Jay Rodrigues, he's had 1 good season with Burnley, and whose to say he will keep his scoring up next season, especially in the Premiership. Sometimes these players are too big for their boots and think they are prolific goalscorers. He could fail miserabely or become an instant hero but its a big gamble.

i think we should look at players who have been snapped up by the promoted prem clubs, but we know will not feature for them.

i.e. maynard , proven at this level but i cant see him making the west ham team next yr as they have cole and vaz te already and will look at others.

same for reading with le fondre. norwich also with jackson.
