" Club Statement On New Badge "

Mon May 14, 2012 3:49 pm

This was a business decision by the Board of Directors bearing in mind the need for sustainable revenue streams from merchandise sales in helping to finance the increasingly expensive future prosperity of the club. Our decision was not made with a sentimental view of the past, it was strategic and financial,

Not our club but Shrewsbury Town who despite their promotion are still having to deal with fans complaining on messageboards about the design of the new club badge.

The club has told them it's just business and not based on any sentimental consideration.

Are we being sentimental over Blue shirts and should we be prepared to accept that it's just a business decision intended to provide greater merchandise revenue. :?

On refection we probably have been, but the incendiary delivery and tone of the leak sent must of us three levels past where we would have been if the message was allowed to come out after the sweeteners.

I just want this sorted quickly we have spent 20 years in limbo.....

No true fan wants us to change to red but if that is what it takes to get this club the success we have all be craving then so be it. I asked my old man how he felt about the proposed changes and he said if it meant that he'd get a chance to watch his beloved Cardiff City in the Premier league its a change he'd be willing to accept. I was quite surprised at his response considering he has supported the club since 1947 and has just turned 79 years old. He said he wanted to be excited by the future and not stuck in the past. Its still a very emotive subject but as I have always maintained if it brings all the investment that VT is suggesting we would be mad to turn it down as it could a decision we'd all live to regret in years to come.

Now that really was how not to carry traditionalists with you!

This is just their badge as well.

Not their colours, badge, nickname etc. (ie- complete identity) as might affect us........

No, we are not being over-sentimental.

Shrewsbury Board Of Directors issued that statement today because a section of their fanbase has not accepted the new badge design.

The new design was introduced for the 2007/08 season when the club moved to it's new stadium and yet 5 years on the debate amongst the fanbase continues.

This should serve as an object lesson to our board because if we are to be rebranded our Board must take on the views of the fanbase.

Perhaps they should come up with some designs and ask Season Ticket holders to vote, maybe that way we can overcome the situation where we will still be debated in 5 years time.

It is the bluebird on the badge that is the problem, because of what it stands for in Asia, cannot see many shirts red or blue being sold in Asia with a badge of a bluebird on it.

dont like it .I have kept out of all this for a few days and just been an observer .I can see and understand why people are willing to compromise and so am I until I see a new badge or red kit.

I am trying hard to compromise but it seems I am just telling myself that I cant take this red change thing.

Well done for your optimism but I dont like it or any Red kit sorry.

Everybody snowball this badge.

It's a compromise not total sellout. The olive branch is out there. Search deep and seize the day TG asked and we delivered. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I do not see any evidence that changing our badge or kit colour will make us money. Please will someone provide me with some real evidence based proof?

I don't get this at all. From Googling round the net for the Bluebird in Chinese symbolism I find:

"BLUEBIRD - denotes spiritual joy and contentedness, foretells happy conditions in one's life"

and

"The bluebird is a symbol of hearth and home, new birth, good health, cheerfulness, prosperity, happiness and love. Considered messengers of these attributes, bluebird representations are often given at weddings and anniversaries. The bluebird gift usually consists of a small glass bird wrapped in a delicate box; however, there are other ways to give the gift of a bluebird, such as in an art painting or print."

Looks to me like a Bluebird on the shirt could be nothing but positive in Asia.

I just bought a football club. I am minted. I am going to call it what I want and they will play in a kit that I like.

OR

Changing from blue to red and changing the bluebirds nikname to dragons will increase sales and investment in Asia

Hmmmm. The first one.

Well how about this then, taken from the Daily Mail.

It's been a bad week for the colour blue. Cardiff City’s new Malaysian owner Vincent Tan tried to change the club’s kit from blue to red, remove the Bluebird from the badge, replace it with a dragon, and generally start again after 103 years of tradition.
The claim was that he views blue as unlucky.
There is another theory. Tan has a Malay-Chinese background and in his native Hokkien dialect ‘bluebird’ translates as a slang term for the male reproductive organ.

Nissan encountered a similar problem when they launched a car called the Nissan Bluebird and discovered not many customers in South-East Asia were keen to drive around in a vehicle essentially called the Nissan Penis.
Due to Welsh protests, Tan has now called off his plans, putting the South-East Asian markets out of his reach — until he gets Cardiff’s shirts sponsored by Viagra.
Meanwhile, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic threatened to snub next year’s Madrid Open because they are moaning they prefer red clay to blue. As they say in parts of Asia, they sound like Bluebirds, the pair of them.
