Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay

MALKY Mackay’s Bluebirds shoot for the play-offs at Crystal Palace tomorrow with ‘belief’ and ‘no fear’ the key words in their quest for a top six finish.

More than 3,000 Cardiff City fans will follow their team to Selhurst Park where a win, or even a draw, will ensure they are in the play-offs.

“We have momentum and we are in control of our own destiny,” declared upbeat manager Mackay. “We have absolutely everything to play for, no fear and a firm belief in what we are doing.

“Every player in our squad is looking forward to the match at Palace. It’s an exciting time and we are ready for this test.”

The Bluebirds can still finish, fourth, fifth or sixth and are jockeying with Blackpool and Birmingham for those positions. Southampton, who host Coventry, and West Ham, who meet Hull at Upton Park, are battling one another for automatic promotion. The one losing out will finish third and could well face the Bluebirds in the two-legged semi-final play-offs.

The only way City can miss out on the top six is by losing at Palace while Middlesbrough win at Watford.

Any other scenario will mean City can start planning for the play-offs with the first leg next Thursday or Friday.

Mackay has a fully-fit squad to choose from, with Don Cowie and Rudy Gestede fit again and given the go-ahead to feature at Selhurst Park.

Gestede will probably start as a substitute, but Cowie seems certain to go straight back into Mackay’s starting XI.

With Peter Whittingham, Stephen McPhail and Aron Gunnarsson sure to be included, that means Liam Lawrence would have to miss out.

He may have to be content with a place among the substitutes and as a likely replacement for McPhail in the second half.

Palace have been hit by injuries, but manager Dougie Freedman insists he has, in winger Wilfried Zaha, ‘the best player in Championship football “by a million miles.”
