MIDDLESBROUGH boss Tony Mowbray has admitted he'd put his money on Cardiff City making the play-offs despite hoping his Boro side can pip the Bluebirds to a top six finish.
Boro travel to Malky Mackay's old team Watford on Saturday knowing they must win and hope the Bluebirds slip up at Crystal Palace.
Cardiff realistically only need a point at Selhurst Park, and Mowbray has begun the mind games by backing the Bluebirds to hold their nerve and get the job done.
“If I was a betting man, I would say that Cardiff would go to Palace and get what they need, but if they don't, we've got to make sure we do our part,”said Mowbray, whose side piled the pressure on Cardiff by beating promotion chasers Southampton 2-1 on Saturday just hours after the Bluebirds stuttered to a 1-1 draw against Leeds at Cardiff City Stadium.
“We have to go to Watford and win,” he added.
“The worst-case scenario is that they get beat, but we draw or lose ourselves
“We can't affect what goes on at Selhurst Park, so we just have to do all we can in our game.
“We have to have the confidence to go down to Watford and try to win the game. We've done it many times away from home this year and that will be our philosophy.
“We know what we have to do, and we won't be looking at any other results until we've won our game. Then we'll come off the pitch and find out what's happened at Selhurst Park.”
If Cardiff can get the point they need, they will make the play-offs for the third consecutive season, where they are likely to play West Ham or Southampton.
