The reason the marathon is totally different is everyone who competes makes that choice for themselves - at the Grand National the horses do not have the right to say they're not going to take part, which I think you will find is the right of everyone who enters the London marathon.
If anyone was forced to compete, then I would want the marathon stopped as well.
