It was one of the most bizarre things ive seen on a football pitch, where in the rulebook does it say defending yourself from a maniac constitutes a sending off?

Pitch invasions are so last year.

Don't think goalie needed last 2 or 3 last kicks. Imagine if that was a police officer caught doing that. Enough said

Im not sure of the rules but violence is that irrelevant of who its against. If a team mate or an opposition player hits you and you hit back then its a red card.

Another example

Good on the keeper. I would've done the same.

Siding with the keeper on this. If someone enters the field of play and attacks you, you every right to defend yourself. Like others have said though not so sure about the extra kicks but, heat of the moment and all that.

In my opinion, the ref should have displayed common sense and said to their manager "look, it's unique circumstances, he shouldn't have done that and the laws say I must dismiss him from the field of play so I am going to ask you to sub him off. If you do not, I will be forced to send him off with a red card".

As an ex-referee the guy, according to the FIFA rulebook, was correct to be sent off.

BUT - This is proof that, at times, the rule book is wrong!

Im with the keeper on this one. He had every right to defend himself

Spot on mate. I would most likely have been looking the other way when the kicking happened.....

Violent conduct
A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality
against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.

He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against
a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person.

Violent conduct may occur either on the field of play or outside its boundaries,
whether the ball is in play or not.

I'm sure that he will not be suspended as their FA have let him off. Quite rightly as well

I agree with you

But i wonder if the ref would have got into trouble if he hadn't sent him off??

this is where common sense comes into play though isn't it! would the referee send himself of for fighting back at someone trying to kill him or would he just take the knife to the heart?

Sadly I don't believe refs are allowed to use common sense because it can lead to further inconsistency.

Law 18 is often regarded as Common Sense......but if you use it you get marked down at times! Like I say, when the keeper was kicking him, I'd have been looking over for assistance from the police or whoever.
