"MALKY INSISTS BLUEBIRDS MUST STRENGTHEN TO GAIN PROMOTION"

Tue Nov 22, 2011 5:38 pm

CARDIFF CITY boss Malky Mackay says he will need to strengthen the Bluebirds squad if they are going to last the distance in the promotion race.

Mackay’s new-look side are surprise contenders for promotion after producing some excellent results in the Championship in recent months, typified by Saturday’s 2-1 win at Reading.

The Cardiff manager had to rebuild the squad on his arrival in the summer following the departure of 12 senior players, including star names like Craig Bellamy, Jay Bothroyd, and Michael Chopra.

This term was expected to be one of consolidation for the Bluebirds but they have made a better than expected start to the campaign.

Despite bringing in 10 players since arriving at the club, Mackay believes he will need to add a few more players to compete at the top end of the table.

“We need to improve our squad size,” said Mackay, whose side would go third tonight with a draw or better at Coventry.

“To go the full distance we are going to have to be very lucky with injuries and suspensions, unless we improve the size of the squad.

“The whole squad needs strengthening. We’ve spoken about having strength in depth at centre-back but that’s about it.

“Everywhere else on the field we don’t have enough players.

“We had a very small group at the start of the season, even with the large numbers of players I signed only brought the numbers up to bearable.

“If one or two go down in key positions then we don’t have the cover there just now.

“So we need to strengthen but sometimes that takes time. It’s usually teams with large numbers that end up at the top of the league.

“But it is good to be in touching distance of the group.”

The loan window shuts on Thursday and Mackay said they will “continue to work” towards bringing new players in.

Defender Dekel Keinan has left to join Crystal Palace on a six-week loan deal but there is unlikely to be much more movement out of Cardiff in the coming days.

Mackay says he is not getting too carried away by Cardiff’s excellent start, even though they could leapfrog Middlesbrough into the top three tonight.

“It’s nice to be in the area we’re in at the moment but in the bigger picture there is an awful long way to go,” added Mackay.

“Any team that puts two or three wins together can jump into that area and anyone who loses two or three can fall back to mid-table. You don’t get too carried away with the league positions at the moment.”

TBH I think its just as important to bring them in at the right time.
People for weeks have been saying we need loans desperately yet we have managed to win 5 of the last 6 games (undefeated in six).
People wanted 3 or 4 (we will calculate with the lower amount of 3) players over that month at lets say they were on 20k a week (more likely more for a average prem player but we will go with a low amount).

Over last month alone that is a saving of 240k which MM now in theory has in January because he hasnt panicked. Thats before even considering a loan fee of course.

Thats enough to bring in a perm player and like MM has said they are planning long term. :ayatollah:

Malky has said many times we need more depth, and that we are luck we havent had any big injurys or Red cards.
So Malky must be worried or he wouldnt go on about it .

Unbeaten in 7 now mate, and yes I'd say planning long-term is much much better than getting everything quickly and success ASAP. Patience is key :) :ayatollah:

Exactly what I have been saying since September, Malky will need more players if we intend to stay in the top 6 this season. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I would rather see signings in january than loan players maybe 1 or 2 loans but much prefer some young players with contracts who want to play for the club.

We had loans last season besides bellamy it didnt work we do need players but loan players and their clubs will want first team football and to be honest none of our team deserve to be dropped
