" 4,000 FANS TO READING IS NOT THAT IMPRESSIVE "

Thu Nov 17, 2011 3:39 pm

to Reading fans as you may think.

Well actually of course it is, however , if you look at the Football League stats for last season , the Majeski catered for the highest number of away fans per match in the Championship last season, coming in at 1,750 compared to 774 at Cardiff.

I guess this table actually illistrates how good our home support is, outstripping Forest and the like who are percieved bigger clubs.

This last table is very interesting and shows the average away support, club-by-club and we come out 7th, which is pretty good considering our Geographical location and restrictions.

Very interesting!

Although a Reading fan, I don't think it's a sign of how well we actually cater for the away fan - although I'd guess not bad - but more to do with the excellent geographical position that we find ourselves, and the fantastic train connections there are: to London, to south coast, to south-west, Wales and to Birmingham.

I'm much more concerned with our own away travel - pretty modest to be honest, and even Port Vale in Leahue 2 take more fans away than we do! I can't really understand it, because we're supposedly in an affluent area of the country too.
We've treated this theme on "Royals Rendezvous", with more stats, but we haven't come up with obvious answers!

Not bad for us as an away support either, when you take into account of all the restrictions and the lack of 3pm saturday kick offs!

Look at it this way, Reading supporters don't like putting cash into the pockets of rival Championship clubs ;)

I remember the days when we'd take 4,000 to Edgar St in Div 4!

4,000 to Hereford? I have been there many times and I cant remember us taking 4 k in division 4 ?

Granted we look large support, but I dont think we ever took as much as 4,000.

I remember taking 8000 to brentford in div 4 on boxing day we couldn't al fit in the ground outnumbered home fans 2 to 1. That's impressive!

double vision glasses are about i think. 2000 to hereford, 5 or 6 to brentford. still back then that was about half our home crowds so it was good. we dont take 10,000 places now do we? could we even?

i'm surprised with some of the clubs stats regarding away support. didn't think there support was that good. hard to believe when most clubs bring only a few hundred to our place.
i think our away support could be slightly better at times number wise but when you've been in this division for so long not many people want to dot he same away trips year in year out. we still make good noise when we go away. cant think of many teams that are louder than us tbh.

We had a massive support at Hereford in February 92 - We had the whole end behind the the goal and best part of that little terrace running along the side of the pitch as weel as the seats above.....at least 4000 there in my opinion though the gates were stormed which led to the Hereford fans running across the pitch to the end opposite the goal!

We took 3000 to York the following season and over 4000 to Wrexham not forgetting 5000+ that travelled to Scunthorpe now that is impressive in Dungeon standards.

I'm plain jealous!
Reading's average away support per game last season was just 849 ... :(

That game at Hereford in 92 was the match i was referring too. Eddie Newton played for us that day. 2all draw i think.
