" The South Wales Miners RIP "

Fri Sep 16, 2011 4:52 pm

The Football club have contacted me today in connection with the fatalities at the Gleision Colliery, probably because I was a miner and come from a mining community, to facilitate a collection next week at the league game against Leicester City. The supporters groups will also be contacted to assist as well and I would hope all Cardiff fans would support this action.

The club are going to hold a raffle using the “shirts off their backs” that the players wear next week to raise monies for the families of the seven men involved in this horrific tragedy in the Swansea valley. They will also look at holding a minute silence and I also know both Cardiff and Swansea City council are also working together in a joint effort to assist the families.

Following the terrible tragedy that happened at Wembley and the remarkable response from our supporters in response to the collections that followed the football club understand it’s a difficult time to organise another collection but hope the fans respond in the way they always do and contribute to the collection in any way they can…all monies will be sent to the main fund raising group in the Swansea valley.

It’s a sad time for all involved and brings back so many memories to those of us with mining backgrounds and we send our deepest condolences to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones…may they rest in peace.

A great gesture by the club, it's heart warming to see the people from Cardiff and Swansea pulling together in the wake of the tragic events of the last couple of weeks.

Sincere condolences to all those involved at Gleision.

An excellent idea, fully worthy of support. From time to time we get a tragic reminder of how dangerous the industries that formed the character of industrial south Wales are, even now. Coal, steel, the docks, most of us of a certain age can recall somebody who died at work. Terrible tragedy, condolences to the family and friends. May the four men rest in peace.

My Dad worked under ground for 38 yrs, and the LLynfi valley is a mining community, allthough the mines have all gone, it was what made South Wales the most important mining area in the world, and countless lives were lost supplying the world with the best coal, my heart goes out to the familys and the community in the Swansea valley, I was at Ninian Parc after the Aberfan disaster when Wales played Scotland, and the sight of money being thrown on to the pitch before the game will live long in my memory. R.I.P

I am not sure mate, the club contacted me and Vince and asked us to organise this although I think Vince was already onto it and maybe they will postpone other plans due to the circumstances...I just don't know mate

Great gesture Cork. I worked underground for twenty eight years and fifteen years attached to the rescue team at Tower , so I know all too well what the rescue boys had to contend with. I know the rescue boys who were there today and know they would have worked tirelessly in very difficult conditions to get those men out ,sadly their immense efforts went unrewarded. Now everyone has an oppurtunity to unite and assist the families,a great gesture by both sets of councils Swansea and Cardiff , I hope it goes well and it shows that some things are bigger and more important than football ,communities and the spirit within our communities is much stronger than any rivalry based on football.I think the last fortnight has been a defining period between our two supporters groups out of two tragic incidents.Best of luck to all involved in raising monies for both causes. R.I.P The Pontadawe Miners,

This country still has vast amounts of untapped natural resource whilst we pay top dollar for foreign fuel. However if it is to be mined, safety needs to be top priority.

RIP the 4 miners.
