Breaking news: Cardiff City closing in on signing

Sat Aug 27, 2011 12:34 pm

Skysports.com understands Cardiff are closing in on a deal for Coventry defender Ben Turner.

The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the Championship's hottest properties and has been drawing admiring glances for some time.

He is a product of Coventry's academy system and has spent his entire career to date with the Sky Blues.

The only time he has spent away from the Ricoh Arena has been during loan spells at Peterborough and Oldham.

He has progressed at pace since breaking into the first team at Coventry and is now considered to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Cardiff are one of a number of clubs that have been monitoring his development and they are now ready to pounce.

The Bluebirds are hoping to land the former England U19 international before Wednesday's transfer deadline.

Very interesting...with the strength in numbers (and emphasise numbers there) it will be interesting to see who Malky thinks is the current 'weak' link in the defence.

Im still hanging a huge question mark over Hudson personally...great club captain but I dont think he inspires confidence in the rest of the defence/team considering his lack of pace and proneness to mistakes

from the Coventry MB ..

"Happy with that, kind of.

Linnell confirms that the deal has been done."

IMHO Hudson has performed the best out of the 4 we've got, but from what I've seen of him, Turner is more dominant than any of them (he was up against Jay during Bothroyd's golden spell), Coventry did well last year until he got injured then they plummetted. He's a real prospect and my Coventry supporting supplier rates him very highly.

And Gerrard isn't prone to mistakes ?

The deal is set to be a cash-plus-player deal with Jon Parkin going in the opposite direction. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Don't agree about the better in the air bit.

Can you rememeber Church getting the better of Gerrard a couple of seasons back ? Church is only 5 ft 10 and beat Gerrard several times.

Gerrard makes it look better with the face pulling and smashing into the back of players, but Hudson wins more against the genuine big players-which is why he generally ends up amkring the bigger striker with Gerrard left with the smaller one.

As for pace, they are both slow. You're prob right that Gerrard is a bit quicker, but as Maynard showed , Gerrard isn't that quick anyway.

Hudson reads the game better and is better positionally, he also doesn't give the ball away as often, mainly because he goes for easy passes rather than Glenn Hoddle passes like Hudson.

They are both OK, but IMHO Hudson is the better of the two.

Can you remember Hudson winning any balls in the air against Mackail-Smith 2 weeks ago, cos I can't and if Hudson usually picks up the bigger man, then why did he push Darcy on to pick up Steve Howard 2 seasons ago, when Darcy should have been the one to drop off and Hudson the one to pick up the big man!

IMO, the goal Maynard scored against us, was more down to angles than pace and if you look at the tackle that Gerrard made on Parker at West Ham (after a mistake by Hudson), then I don’t think that Hudson would have been quick enough to get back at Parker!

Both Hudson and Gerrard have been guilty of sloppy passing so far this season, but I can‘t agree that Hudson reads the game better than Gerrard, as I can’t see that this scenario has been tested!

When Gerrard has played alomgside Hudson, Gerrard is the one who tends to have to attack the ball more often, whilst Hudson likes to drop off and play a sweeper type role, which IMO, he is to slow for!

Neither player is good enough to lead the back four IMO and I think that we are desperately short of somebody with a bit of pace, to come in and command the back four!

IMO, Hull’s player of last season can step up his game, whilst I believe Hudson cannot! :ayatollah:

Mackail Smith ? He had the ball on the deck all the time. Brighton were no threat in the air at all. It was on the floor they fucked us up.

As for Howard, he pulled deep and sat on Blake for 20 minutes when he did the damage, it was a clever move and the 2 centre halfs should have sorted it quicker - when he was against Hudson he had nowhere near as much luck.

Hull are shit. Blake would have been their player of the season if he'd gone there. I'm more concerned about what I see in front of me. Hudson wa sour 2nd best player last year -and for me that means a hell of a lot more

Gerrard did well at West Ham, and I agree that was an excellent tackle, but has been poor in the 2 home games I've seen, wheras Hudson had 2 good, one bad.

As for reading the game, the number of times Hudson breaks up attacks by being in the right place and also the number of times he's there to block shots shows me that he reads it very well. take a look at who has managed him in the past, all very good managers with excellent records, they can't all be wrong.

If Gerrard can step up, then I'd love to see it, as he hasn't shown it yet. Lets hope he does, he has got time on his side and seems to have matured a little over the last year. For now though he's 2nd best for me.

Mackail-Smith won umpteen balls in the air against Hudson, especially in the first half, but his main failing is his lack of pace, which is why he defends too deep, as he likes to have the security of the goalkeeper being a bit closer to him!

As I said, I don’t believe that either of them are capable of taking us to the Premiership together, but I believe that if we bring somebody in with a bit of pace, who can marshall the defence and take control there, then gerrard may still be able to play his part!

IMO, Hudson is never ever going to be good enough and I don’t give a shit about any of his previous managers either, as Crystal Palace and Charlton are hardly benchmarks for a step up to the Premier League, which is where we need to be!

As for Hudson being our second best player last season, then you must be just talking about the defence, as I’d love to know where that stat came from, as Bellamy, Bothroyd, Whitts, McNaughton, Olofinjana, Chopra and even Chris Burke had a better season IMO!
