Pathetic rule
Goalkeeper and 4 outfield players, so say if you pick 2 strikers 1 midfield and 1 defender, and either 2 of your midfielders or defenders get injured during the game, you could well be in shit street.

Or you have more versatile players on the bench. (2 strikers is definitely not a good option).
It's to do with saving money. Less players in the matchday squad means less wage money to pay out.

It can be good and bad. Good because the better clubs can't have the extra 2 quality subs. Bad because we will more likely have players getting moody because they can't get in the match day squad.

Most managers don't want seven subs, it's too many people to take with you for an away match. A very good rule IMO. Pleased with it.

Being someone from the dinosaur age before subs were allowed, I feel that 5 subs is more than ample. Players should be capable of playing in a variety of positions and 5 subs gives a lot of scope.
