MARTYN MARGETSON has left Cardiff City after 10 years – and will now confront the Bluebirds on the opening weekend of the new season.

For Margetson, 39, has been appointed goalkeeping coach at newly-relegated West Ham, Cardiff’s first Championship opponents on August 7.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was looking for a new goalkeeping coach following the departure of David Coles and turned to Margetson, who will now work alongside England star Robert Green among others.

It remains to be seen whether Margetson – who was Gary Speed’s first backroom appointment after taking over from John Toshack as national team boss last December – continues his role as Wales goalkeeping coach,

Margetson was originally kept on by new Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay, even though Watford’s Alec Chamberlain was linked with the post.

Now Baglan-born Margetson has made the move to east London, Cardiff may pursue Chamberlain.

Mackay has already changed the Bluebirds’ backroom team with assistant manager Terry Burton, coach Paul Wilkinson and fitness coach Alex Armstrong all on gardening leave.

The trio will see out their contracts without going to the club’s Vale of Glamorgan Resort training ground and are free to find employment elsewhere.

Already, there have been four arrivals from Mackay’s former club Watford – David Kerslake as number two, Joe McBride in a coaching role, newly-appointed physio Richard Collinge and midfielder Don Cowie.

Watford chairman Graham Taylor has expressed the Hornets’ annoyance at five members of staff leaving Vicarage Road for the Bluebirds and Cardiff’s Championship rivals would be furious if Chamberlain followed them down the M4.

Margetson came through Manchester City’s youth programme and made more than 50 first-team appearances, making his full debut in a Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

He has also played for Bristol Rovers, Bolton, Luton, Southend and Huddersfield before joining Cardiff.

He made his Cardiff debut in the 2002-03 season and won one Wales cap against Canada in 2004.

Great, now let's get a decent goalkeeping coach in! Someone who doesn't make our keepers become scared of crosses and become obsessed with kicking it into the stands!

Surprised he got the Hammers job, lets be honest our keepers havnt been setting the world alight recently, but he can only work with whats in front of him i suppose.
Fresh start recently with us and a fresh goalkeeping coach could be a good thing. Chamberlain will probably be our man :ayatollah:

It would be nice to get in a goalkeeping coach from another European country.

Peter Cech's comments in yesterday's Daily Mail (not my normal read!) are noteworthy:

'Someone should ask the question why almost all the No 1 goalkeepers in the Premier League are foreign. Why is that? I'm not sure. Is it because of the way the goalkeepers are schooled here? Is it a completely different approach to the Czech or the French? Maybe someone should take a look at this and ask whether change is needed. At the moment, some of the other nations are ahead. If you are always doing the same thing, someone should find a different way of coaching and developing English goalkeepers.'

Malky should call Andreas Köpke in Germany and ask for his suggestions.
