Rangers' interest in Dundee United striker David Goodwillie appears to be cooling, at least for now.
The Ibrox club had a bid of £1m for the 22-year-old rejected by United last week, but it seems certain that they will now focus on other targets.
Cardiff City are favourites to land Scotland's young player of the year and appear willing to meet the £2m asking price set by chairman Stephen Thompson.
Goodwillie is contracted to the Tannadice club until May 2013.
Manager Malky Mackay has been reshaping the Bluebirds squad for the new season and has recently brought Scots Don Cowie and Craig Conway, Goodwillie's team-mate at Dundee United in recent seasons, to the Championship club.
A United spokesman said on Wednesday: "We can confirm we have received a bid from Rangers for David Goodwillie.
"The bid has been rejected because it does not meet our valuation."
On Tuesday the Tayside club had issued a statement saying, despite speculation, no bid had been received from Rangers, the club that tried to sign the player in the January transfer window.
Rangers owner Craig Whyte has described Thompson's £2m price tag for Goodwillie as "too steep" but Ibrox manager Ally McCoist has since insisted that any deal to bring the goalscorer to Glasgow is not "dead in the water".
