Cardiff set to hijack second Rangers transfer with bid for Dundee United ace David Goodwillie
Jun 24 2011 David Mccarthy; Euan Mcarthur
CARDIFF City last night moved to hijack Ally McCoist's team-building plans for a second time by launching a bid for Dundee United's star striker David Goodwillie.
The Championship side - managed by former Celtic defender Malky Mackay - snatched Tannadice winger Craig Conway from under Rangers' nose earlier this week and yesterday opened talks with Arabs chairman Stephen Thomson on Goodwillie.
Rangers have baulked at United's £2million valuation of Goodwillie.
They hope to land the Scotland cap for half that fee but now face being gazumped by Cardiff again.
Mackay, who moved to Cardiff from Watford last week, has a transfer budget of £16m in his bid to guide the Welsh club to the Premiership.
McCoist returns from holiday today and will head straight to talks with director of football Gordon Smith.
One of the first tasks will be to contact Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish about their bid to bring Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar back to Ibrox.
McCoist is desperate to conclude that deal and it emerged last night Villa are prepared to let Cuellar go - and Rangers believe for less than the £3m quoted by some yesterday.
The Gers boss is also set to go back in for Hearts left-back Lee Wallace after a £300,000 bid was rejected.
Like Wallace, Gers right-back Steven Whittaker is the final year of his contract but while he is being chased by Turkish side Bursaspor the ex-Hibs man won't be allowed to leave.
Smith also revealed talks have started with Crystal Palace's out-ofcontract midfielder Neil Danns.
