Cardiff Players' Antics Are Enough To Drive Dave Jones To DrinK

So, just how badly do some of Dave Jones' Cardiff City players want to reach the Premier League? Not very much has to be the only reasonable conclusion if accusations are correct that members of the squad were out drinking less than 48 hours before the game that ultimately ended their hopes of automatic promotion.

Even in a division as topsy-turvy as the Championship, a 3-0 home defeat to mid-table Middlesbrough was just about the last result you might have expected when a victory would have taken the Welsh club's bid for a top two place down to the last day of the regular season.

It's the kind of shock set-back which had home fans in a 25,000 crowd heading for the exits well before half-time as their side inexplicably shipped three goals in a manner which left it reasonable to assume that many of those clad in blue were somewhat worse for wear.

Well, that might not be as far fetched as it seems, after the Daily Mail reported that Jones tore into members of his squad after discovering their alleged late-night antics.

Having seen them potentially toss away a season's hard work in the space of 20 minutes, he of course has every right to be apoplectic, especially as a failure to win promotion could end up costing the manager his job.

To make matters worse, Jones had even given his squad permission to attend a supporters' player-of-the-year function, but of course only on the proviso they remained on their best behaviour, and that meant staying sober, and heading straight home afterwards.

Somewhere along the way, it seems that message may have been lost in translation. Instead, it's claimed many of the squad went into the city centre for a drinking session that continued late into the night - like you do, on the eve of one of the club's most pivotal fixtures in its recent history, a defeat to help hand second place to Norwich City.

Jay Bothroyd and full back Jlloyd Samuel were two of the more high-profile players who allegedly stayed out, with the on-loan Bolton defender hauled off during a nightmare team display that saw the Bluebirds jeered by their crestfallen fans.

That well-known hell-raiser Craig Bellamy, however, wasn't believed to be among the off-message players. That being the case, it's certain the somewhat opinionated forward will be reminding his erring team-mates of their responsibilities as they head into the final game of the season at Burnley needing a victory to be guaranteed third place.

A prolific Twitterer, Bothroyd has not yet been back onto the social networking site to plead his innocence or otherwise. Make of that what you will.

After the defeat to Tony Mowbray's resurgent Boro, the England forward said: "No matter who is up front, you can never win a game being 3-0 down after 20 minutes. The defending needs to be better and we apologise to the fans.

"I'm not slagging any teammates individually. It's a team game and we defend collectively as a whole, it needs to be better."

So, it's the play-offs again for last season's beaten Wembley finalists, with a potential meeting somewhere along the way with Swansea City for the right to earn the £70 million that accompanies the final promotion place.

Some 12 months on from coming up just short against Blackpool, should they repeat the trick again this time, especially against their bitter local rivals, it would surely be enough to drive them to drink.

Embarrassing :(

The only way they can redeem themselves is by getting promotion. But if we fail then those that are guilty must leave our Club and it dosen't matter how good they are. One of Dave Jone's problems is discipline but then again it must be like bashing your head against a brick wall with some of these overpaid prima donnas. So i do in one sense sympathise with him as they aint kids but unfortunately they need treating like them.
