Burnley Away!

Tue May 03, 2011 10:24 am

AN increased police presence will be in place around Turf Moor next Saturday, with 4,000 Cardiff fans set to descend on Burnley.

Police have made the final game of the season a category C fixture, meaning it has the potential for trouble.

While the Clarets’ hopes of a play-off place ended at the weekend, thousands of Cardiff fans will make the trip to Lancashire with their team still in the hunt for an automatic promotion place to the Premier League.

But despite the increased presence, Chief Inspector Jeff Brown is expecting a friendly atmosphere.

He said: “It is the last match of the season and many fans come in fancy dress.

"It is usually an enjoyable occasion and quite celebratory.

“It is obviously a big game for Cardiff and they will be bringing a lot of fans, and we are expecting the home end to be close to a sell-out as well.

"We look forward to welcoming fans to the game and hope it will be a family, friendly atm-osphere.”

Like all games on the final day of the Championship seas-on, the game at Turf Moor will kick off at 12.45pm. Cardiff fans who have bought tickets for the match have been told they will not be allowed in to town centre pubs before the game, but a limited number will be allowed in Burnley Cricket Club.

The pubs are expected to remain open for Clarets fans before the match.

After the FA Cup game against Port Vale in January, town centre pubs were asked to close for a short period after the game to avoid any flashpoints.

It is not yet known whether the same tactic will be employed after Saturday’s game.
