McCormack impresses.

Ross McCormack staked a claim for a starting role in Leeds United’s first team with a four goal haul for the reserves in their 6-0 win over Hartlepool United in the Totesport.com East League on Tuesday night.

The former Cardiff City striker has been on the fringe of the first team squad in recent weeks, but with Billy Paynter suspended for three matches following his red card against Sheffield United, McCormack gave United boss Simon Grayson a reminder of his capabilities.

The 25 year old Scottish international’s display was the highlight of an impressive team performance, with Sanchez Watt and Adam Clayton also getting on the scoresheet. The result maintained United’s push for a third consecutive reserve team title, with a potential title decider against Middlesbrough next up for the Whites on Tuesday 29 March.

Reserve team manager Neil Readfearn told the clubs official website: “We were outstanding.” Commenting on McCormack’s performance, Redfearn said: “He was unplayable at times. There’s been times in the last three or four games when he’s been like that. It’ll give him confidence. He knows that if he goes back into the first team he’ll be at it.”

Howson award nomination.

Leeds United captain Jonny Howson has been nominated for the ESPN/PFA Championship player for March. The award, voted for by the fans has been won for the last two months by United’s Robert Snodgrass, and Howson will be keen to make it a hat-trick.

His displays over the past month have included an impressive double strike against Doncaster Rovers, and his all-action displays in midfield have seen him at the forefront of Leeds United’s continued push for promotion to the Premier League.

Howson does face stiff competition for the award, with recently the recently crowned Championship player of the year Adel Taraabt of QPR leading the contenders. The other nominees are all strikers, Watford’s Danny Graham, Bristol City’s Nicky Maynard and Grant Holt of Norwich City.

Howson’s performances have earned him a late call-up for the England U-21’s for their forthcoming friendly matches against Denmark and Iceland over the next week.

Where did it all go wrong? 2 words: Michael Chopra. Until he arrived on loan, Ross was doing ok, but then had to be pushed out wide when Chops came if my memory serves me correctly

I remember that penalty he scored, late winner against Burnley down the grange. The crowd went nuts, for sure we were in the play off's......... we all know the rest.

It's all about confidence with Ross, didn't he miss a penalty against Preston last game, tha season? Not been the same since. He needed an arm round the shoulder by Jones, don't think he ever got it. After that, he drifted off and found love with the booze. Real shame.

He played out wide up in Scotland, only really played up front central with us.

Chops or McCormack is a no-brainer. One a natural finisher, the other who if you discount the penalties had a goal tally from open play that season which matched Bothroyd's - and that was Bothroyd's then best return in a season...
