David Ibbotson: Search for Emiliano Sala pilot's body to start next week

Tuesday 19th February 2019

A new search for the body of a missing pilot could start next week, his family have said.

David Ibbotson, of Crowle, North Lincolnshire, was flying Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala to the UK when their aircraft crashed near Guernsey on 21 January.

The footballer's body was recovered from the plane wreck on the seabed, but Mr Ibbotson's body has not been found.
An appeal by his family to fund the search has raised more than £240,000.

On the fundraising site, the Ibbotson family thanked donors and said a new search involving deep sea divers would "start hopefully beginning of next week".

"We are just waiting on confirmation of dates to update you all," the post said.

"Also we are organising the helicopter searches of the coastal areas [which] will be starting a lot sooner than the deep dive.
"You have all been so amazing and thank you for all your kind messages and donations.
"

The Piper Malibu N264DB was en route from Nantes in France to Cardiff, two days after the Argentine striker's £15m transfer to Cardiff was announced.

An official search was called off on 24 January, but Sala's body was found after an appeal launched by his agent raised £324,000 (371,000 euros) for a private search.

The Ibbotson family launched their own appeal with a target of £300,000, writing. "We can not bear the thought of him being alone, we need him home so that we are able to lay him to rest."

The fund was boosted with contributions from French footballer Kylian Mbappe, who donated £27,000, and former England captain Gary Lineker who gave £1,000.

Not trying to sound insensitive, but couldn’t all this money raised be used in a better way (given to charity or something?) rather than trying to recover a body (which probably won’t be found) which won’t be any use to anyone.

Finding a body is very important.

You are being very insensitive.
How would you feel if someone said that about a close family member of yours.

David Ibbotson search team to revisit Emiliano Sala plane wreckage for missing pilot

Tuesday 19th February 2019

The total raised so far stands at more than £247,000.

The wreckage of the plane where Emiliano Sala's body was found is to be examined again by deep-sea divers searching for the body of missing pilot David Ibbotson.

Mr Ibbotson and Cardiff City signing Sala were travelling in the same light aircraft which initially vanished near the Channel Islands on January 21, before its wreckage was located on the seabed of the English Channel nearly a fortnight later.

Sala's body was recovered from amid the wreck, and his funeral took place in Argentina at the weekend.

Mr Ibbotson remains unaccounted for almost a month after the plane initially vanished from radar.

The search is being conducted by David Mearns, the man who located the wreckage of the Piper PA-46 Malibu almost two weeks after it vanished, in a private underwater search on behalf of the Sala family.

A deep-sea dive is expected to begin next week, with helicopter searches of coastal areas to begin this week.

On Tuesday, Mr Mearns said: "I have been assisting the family of pilot David Ibbotson to hopefully locate his body.

"This search is technically very different to the underwater search for the Piper Malibu aircraft. It is dependent on good weather, neap tides and flight permits. The family needs space to plan.

"The 'search' will include a dive to the wreck to rule out 100% that David's body is there and a helicopter search of inaccessible coastal areas in the Channel Islands using trained pilots and observers. All contingent on good weather, permits, etc."

After air accident investigators confirmed poor weather conditions meant they would not be bringing the aircraft wreckage to the surface, an online crowdfunding page was set up by Mr Ibbotson's family to fund a new search.

The total raised so far stands at more than £247,000.

The family confirmed on Tuesday their plans for deep-sea divers to begin a new search.

An update on the Ibbotson family's GoFundMe page said: "Thank you all so much for your support. we are looking to have the Deep Divers start hopefully beginning of next week.

"We are just waiting on confirmation of dates to update you all. Also we are organising the helicopter searches of the coastal areas just will be starting a lot sooner than the Deep Dive.

"You have all been so amazing and thank you for all your kind messages and donations. From the Ibbotsons".

It comes after Argentine striker Sala's funeral was held in his hometown of Progreso at the weekend.

You can see the pictures as his friends, family and hometown turned out to say their goodbyes in the gallery below

Much of the town - which has a population of around 3,000 - turned out to say goodbye to their most famous son in a day-long wake.

Mr Ibbotson's family, from Lincolnshire, have previously spoken about never giving up hope of finding him.

David Ibbotson's family on never giving up hope of finding him

His wife Nora told Good Morning Britain: "We know that he is dead. We do know that, but we just want him home.

"He has been a brilliant husband, he has supported us all. He was our supporter. He was our rock

"We can't leave him out there on his own. We are trying to do everything we can. This is why we have done the appeal for some help to guide us."

Compassion is "Feeling For Another" and is the parent of empathy "Feeling As Another" which means having the capacity for person centered acts of active compassion. Active compassion is the desire to alleviate another's suffering.

David Ibbotsons family are suffering and to them finding his body will be priceless.
