Details of Emiliano Sala plane crash to be revealed

The interim report into the plane crash that killed Emiliano Sala is to be published

Emiliano Sala's family look set to get some answers over the Cardiff City striker's death as investigators prepare to release their initial findings into the tragedy.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman is quoted as telling the Telegraph: “We believe that the player was not registered with the Premier League,so was not a Cardiff City player.”

The light aircraft which Sala and pilot David Ibbotson were flying in vanished from radar on January 21, before its wreckage was located on the seabed of the English Channel almost two weeks later.

Sala's body was recovered from the wreck before an inquest confirmed he had died from "head and trunk injuries", while Mr Ibbotson tragically remains unaccounted for and there is no active search looking for him .

This week, an official report into what happened is due to be published.

When is the official report being published?

An interim report is due to be released by the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch this week.

They are a branch of the Department for Transport, and are tasked with investigating the circumstances around the plane's disappearance before it was located on the seabed of the English Channel almost a fortnight later.

It has said it aims to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring. That date takes us up to Thursday, February 21, but we could be seeing the report a few days either side of the one-month mark from when the Piper PA-46 Malibu lost contact with Jersey Air Traffic Control after making a request to descend from 5,000ft to 2,300ft.

The AAIB's remit is to "undertake safety investigations to establish the cause of accidents". They do not apportion blame or liability.

What will the interim report cover?

The interim report will largely focus on the initial factual findings of the investigation team, who spent almost four days at the crash site after the wreckage was located.

Such a report is only commissioned so quickly in cases where there could be an urgent public safety aspect or if there as a significant public and media interest.

Numerous images of the plane wreckage have been captured to help try and form a picture of what might have caused the aircraft to plunge into the English Channel. This has been done using underwater remotely operated vehicles, used at the crash site to gather as much information as possible.

However, given how investigators have only had one month to get their probe under way, there are likely to be significant questions that remain unanswered until the full findings are published. That process could well take around 12 months.

What do we know about the condition of the plane?

The AAIB released an image of the underwater wreckage after confirming the wreck had been located, which showed part of the plane's registration and its rear left side of the fuselage.

This is the only image to have been released of the wreckage, meaning we don't know the condition of the rest of the aircraft.

However, marine scientist David Mearns - the man who located the wreck during a private underwater search on behalf of the Sala family - has previously spoken about "most" of the plane being found .

After locating it, Mr Mearns then passed the information onto the AAIB. Both parties were splitting an area between them to search underwater.

The AAIB had said they would consider the feasibility of recovering the aircraft wreckage if successful at recovering Sala's body.

After recovery of the body proved successful, poor weather conditions meant teams made the decision leave the aircraft at the bottom of the ocean.

Mr Mearns has previously told the Sunday Times that the AAIB had the mindset "We have a decent idea why the plane has crashed".

The evidence investigators will look at

As well as the physical evidence from the plane, interviews will be conducted with key people, including the owners of the plane and those who organised the flight. Football agents Willie McKay and his son Mark have previously confirmed they helped arrange the flight, but say they did not select the plane or pilot.

It is not publicly known who owned the plane. Southern Aircraft Consultancy Inc, a British-based Trustee firm who registered the aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA, confirmed earlier this month that they had given details of the real owners to the Air Accident Investigation Branch. You can read their full statement here .

Mr Ibbotson's pilot licence will be another area investigators will examine. The 59-year-old, from Lincolnshire, held a British private pilot's licence and passed a medical exam as recently as November, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.

An audio recording of a WhatsApp call said to have been made by Sala will also be of interest. In the recording, Sala appears to refer to how his aircraft "seems to be falling apart". You can read a full transcript and listen to the message here .

Sala's funeral

Mourners paid their respects to the Argentinian striker at his funeral on Saturday in his hometown of Progreso.

His devastated family and friends came together to say goodbye to the talented 28-year-old, who had been due to begin his new life in the Premier League.

Most of the village’s 3,500 inhabitants joined the footballer's family in saying goodbye to its most famous son, who grew up in nearby Cululu.

Local children formed a guard of honour and mourners applauded the coffin as it was carried from the sports club at the end of the funeral, before being taken to Santa Fe for a private cremation service to be held.

Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock was among the mourners, who attended the funeral in South America along with club CEO Ken Choo and player liaison officer Callum Davies.

Warnock told WalesOnline after the service: "Things like this don't happen very often. You can't really understand the emotions of the family, but the thing today is how united they all are.

“The whole village is really united, and I think it just brings it home to you just how important family are." You can read his full tribute here .

The dispute between Cardiff City and Nantes

Amid the backdrop of the tragedy, a legal wrangle has developed between Cardiff City and the club Sala was leaving, Nantes, over the £15m transfer fee.

Cardiff have frozen any payments while they conduct their own investigation into Sala's death, after Nantes demanded the first £5m payment of the transfer fee.

It emerged on Sunday that the Bluebirds have sent letters to Everton, West Ham and Crystal Palace to ascertain whether the clubs had any interest in signing Sala.

A key part of the Bluebirds' investigation is now around concerns that agent Willie McKay told Sala he had planted stories about interest from other clubs "in order to create an interest around you".

Cardiff are anticipating the clubs confirming they had no interest in signing Sala.

Another aspect of the dispute is whether Sala was officially registered as a Cardiff player.

Chairman Mehmet Dalman is quoted as telling the Telegraph: “We believe that the player was not registered with the Premier League, so was not a Cardiff City player.”

I don't get the asking premier league clubs about sala if they were interested or not? We agreed the fee for 15m whether that was over the price we wanted to pay is irrelevant surely?
If sala was here now we would pay the 15m surely?
