Nottingham Forest are delighted to confirm the appointment of Martin O’Neill as the club’s new manager.

The Northern Irishman enjoyed a hugely successful playing career which included 371 appearances and 62 goals during a 10-year-spell at The City Ground, a time in which he helped The Reds to win a First Division title, two European Cups and two League Cups.

O’Neill’s playing career also saw him feature for Norwich City, Manchester City and Notts County while he was a regular in the Northern Ireland squad and captained his country at the 1982 World Cup in Spain before he moved into coaching.

During his management career, O’Neill had successful spells in charge of Wycombe Wanderers and Leicester City where both clubs lifted silverware under his guidance and he also led The Foxes to promotion to the Premier League in his first season at the club with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Wembley.

O’Neill then made the move to take charge of Celtic, going on to win seven trophies and reach a UEFA Cup final during his time in Glasgow before he returned to English football where he made a positive impact during a four-year stay at the helm of Aston Villa.

Following a spell as manager of Sunderland, O’Neill was offered the role as Republic of Ireland boss in November 2013 and he led the team to Euro 2016 during a qualification campaign which included a 1-1 draw against Germany in Gelsenkirchen before a 1-0 win over the-then world champions back in Dublin.

Under O'Neill's management, Ireland went on to reach the Round of 16 at Euro 2016 having qualified from a group which included Italy and Belgium.

One of the original and most-loved ‘Miracle Men’, Martin is finally realising a life-long dream in managing his beloved Nottingham Forest. With his commitment to the club, knowledge of the game and passion to succeed, O’Neill will be aiming to take the club back into the top flight of English football and make the miracle happen again.

Old school will probably prove better than most of his recent predecessors, I think they have looked at what Warnock has done here.

Wish him well, one of the old school who should not be jettisoned due to his age and being outside of league football.

He’s a dinosaur.

Not sure how the same old managers keep on getting jobs.
