Cardiff City in talks to sign former Leeds United wonderkid who is tearing up non-league
By Dominic Booth

He's been linked with Leicester and Wigan after some brilliant performances in the lower leagues

Cardiff City are in negotiations to sign former Leeds United wonderkid Billy Whitehouse who is currently thriving in non-league football.

The 22-year-old came through the ranks at Doncaster Rovers and made just a single appearance for Leeds before dropping into non-league and is now plying his trade for Tadcaster Albion.

WalesOnline understands Cardiff are in talks to add Whitehouse to their Under-23s squad and hope to develop his talents.

Whitehouse has scored nine goals and laid on an impressive 19 assists for Tadcaster this season, the North Yorkshire outfit who play in the Evo-Stik Division One East — the eighth tier of English football.

He was linked with a move back into the football league in April this year, with Mansfield Town, Cambridge United and Wigan Athletic all reportedly monitoring Whitehouse.

Leicester City have even been linked with a surprise swoop for a player released by former Leeds and Swansea City boss Garry Monk from Elland Road in 2017.

And after subsequent spells with Guiseley, Alfreton Town, Shaw Lane and now Tadcaster, Whitehouse could now be presented with another big chance at the highest level.

Cardiff's Under-23s signed former Leeds pair Jack and Paul McKay in December 2017 and regularly add players on short-term deals.

Paul McKay played alongside Whitehouse in the latter's only Leeds appearance, an FA Cup tie at Sutton United

Ex Bangor City goalkeeper Matthew Hall was the latest player to join Jarred Harvey's set up, with former Everton youngster Tyrone Duffus, Dan Martin (formerly of Fulham) and Welsh league star Ryan Pryce all part of the squad.

I realise that it's a signing for the Under 23's but this lad is 22 now and surely if he had the ability to play at a higher level he would have shown it by now?

Of course there are many players who only really come good later on - Ian Wright is one name that comes to mind, and if the boy is cheap and works hard then maybe he could be a worthwhile signing but if we are signing 22 year olds surely they should be good enough to be at least pushing for a squad place?

Don't forget Jamie Vardy didn't sign for Leicester until he was about 23 - 24.

its not always about not having ability ,some kids just take their talent for granted and end up released for attitude,

the lucky ones grow up and get another chance

Can't be much of a wonder kid if he is in non league. At his age he should be in a premier league team if he is that good.

I think you’ve answered your own question davids.
Different lads mature at different ages playing wise and mentally/attitude wise. These are the type of players we should be bringing in and trying for a season as there must be other Vardy/Wright type players out there without a doubt.

Trouble is our under 23 team is a sort of black hole out of which no one ever emerges, except to play for Barry a few years later. If Messi had come through our under 23's he would have ended up at Haverfordwest.
