Newport County 4-0 Wrexham: Exiles book Leicester City clash with four-goal thrashing

Luke Young's 13th minute red card proved crucial in the all-Welsh FA Cup clash

Newport County booked a glamour FA Cup third round tie with Leicester City after overcoming the 10 men of Wrexham in their all-Welsh replay.

Luke Young's early dismissal effectively ended any hopes of a Wrexham victory and four second-half goals from Padraig Amond, Jamille Matt, Dan Butler and an own goal from Mark Carrington.

After the two teams played out a 0-0 draw at Rodney Parade, the opening exchanges of this second round replay looked like following a similar tale.

Scrappy 50/50s and loose passes marked the opening few minutes, with neither side really settling down.

And then, in the 13th minute, came the moment that changed the whole dynamic of the match.

Exiles skipper Mickey Demetriou the victim of a horror lunge from Wrexham's Luke Young, with referee Kevin Johnson wasting little time in producing the red card.

After that, it was largely all Newport - with only their sloppy passing and lack of a final ball stopping them troubling the scorers in the first-half.

In particular, one five minute spell would have left Michael Flynn frankly unsure how his side were not in front.

After Wrexham goalkeeper Rob Lainton had parried away Dan Butler's angled drive, Demetriou saw an ambitious volley sail just wide.

The onslaught wasn't over, with Antoine Semenyo to the fore.

First, the forward nearly turned provider, only to see his cross diverted wide from point-blank range by Jamille Matt. And then he fired over following a neat little run from out wide.

After withstanding all that pressure, Wrexham nearly broke the deadlock after 40 minutes, with Paul Rutherford's snap shot from outside the box tipped over the bar by a otherwise-untroubled Joe Day in the Newport goal.

Flynn would have wanted a fast start to the second-half against Wrexham's 10 men. He got it.

After just four minutes, Newport got their goal.

From a corner, Fraser Franks headed it towards goal, with Amond getting the final touch to divert it in.

Goalscorer turned provider 10 minutes later as Amond found Matt with a precise pullback.

The Newport forward showed plenty of composure to slot the ball in the back of the net, with Lainton left standing still.

Six minutes later, it was three.

Amond's dragged shot bounced off the shin of Carrington and into the Wrexham net after a quick free-kick caught the visitors off-guard.

And Butler capped off the win with a stunning strike in stoppage time.
