“ Chelsea fans trying to take Cardiff’s end “

Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:31 am

1984 Ninian Park, Chelsea fans left the ground at 3-1 down with about 15mins left of the game.
Chelsea made their way around and on to the corner of the Bob Bank entrance, I rem it well, one policeman with a dog held them back at first before reinforcements arrived, about 300 of them and at the same time Chelsea scored to make it 3-2.

Cardiff weee at first caught off guard as Chelsea did this at every away ground in them days.

So at first Chelsea had the upper hand and shocked Cardiff and the old bill.

Hundreds of Cardiff then charged over, by this time Chelsea had scored again 3-3.

A lot of Chelsea had then gone in the Canton stand to celebrate equalising.

Police had locked the main gate of the Bob Bank.

As soon as the finalwhistle went Cardiff and Chelsea fought all the way to Cardiff Central train station.

In 1984 Chelsea off the field were up there with the best.

Chelsea / Cardiff had nothing but respect for each other.

Pic
Cardiff coming down towards Chelsea and Chelsea had come up towards Cardiff on the corner entrance of the Bob Bank Ninian Park.

The year I was born 84, my dad was there and remembers it well, he loved a good scrap back in the day.

He told me about a time in the mid 80s where they went to Chelsea away and after game they were in Soho, load of Chelsea come in, my dad had to hide his colours with his 4 mates as they were completely outnumbered, pub was smashed up though, not many injured but Dad said Chelsea were bonkers.

Chelsea really were mad in them days, Cardiff were as well, but the difference was Chelsea were really organised and many older lads than us.

Yes Stan they did, but about 200 Cardiff from the Grandstand were then fighting with Chelsea outside the Ninian Park Pub.

I also remember the year Hickey's lot came on to the corner of the bob bank/grange end. After a bit of coin throwing from them,Cardiff ran them out with a few getting thrown over the wall and a 10 ft drop!!

Yes I was there by the hot dog van late 70’s.

Cardiff went mental, but fair okay Hickey and his bunch had a hell of a lot of bottle to come on our end and let Cardiff know they were there.
Hickey ended up with bandages around his head, in later years I got to know them all very well through the late Chelsea Pat Dolan :thumbright:

I was working in sarf London. Locals were all Chelsea and took a minibus up there. Some of them featured in the TV documentary around that time. They told me their side of it - got turned over before the match under the railway bridge by the old café after being asked the time. Yes that old one. They went down Bute Street after the match but stayed in their bus because the locals were too "lairy" and they would have called them.

Was that the year the railings got pushed over in the park on Sloper Road?

Yes remember the copper with the dog shutting the gate just in time, otherwise would of been mayhem,

I originally started off in corner of the Grandstand, but unfortunately our numbers wee low in there, as most went into the Bob Band, as word was before in the Ninian Pub, was that Chelsea were going in the Bob Bank,
We got attacked in the Grandstand, from the enclosure, seats to our left and they also came up steps from underneath,
It's only match I can recall, where home fans were escorted out of our end after being attacked by away fans,
Was very dodgy in town later aswell,
Was with Rawlings, Karl, Stan and handful of others, had wait for Chelsea to clear before we all got train north.

The railings going over was this season 1984.

So much happened that day it was well out of control.

It makes me shake my head when incidents like the recent Villa one are seen as severe. If there had been CCTV and camera phones in the 70s and 80s then people could see what a real riot was. Some of that Chelsea lot led very nasty changes. I remember them in my then local handing out the mini box cutter type Stanley knives for a trip to Leeds. Horrific weapon in somewhere like a packed pub or the old standing terrace. I know others did the same but they were amongst the first to use them.

Haven't we gone over all this before on here, and not so long back. Anyway, very lively, with Cardiff more than holding their own throughout the day, including before, during in the Canton stand, and straight after the game. Once they let the whole of the away end out, it was a different story. They were the best to have ever come to Ninian Park imo.

I was in the Canton just behind the goal so saw all 6 goals at close quarters. Chelsea's equaliser was never a pen - it hit Dave Tong in the chest not his arm. It was mad before that and that just made it worse.
There's some highlights on you tube I believe.

But I have always disagreed with anyone who carries s knife a total evil coward in my opinion.

Embarrassing that grown men still think this was a good thing.

It was disgusting and frightening for the thousands of sensible people who went to try and watch the football without getting involved in this sort of incident. I hated having to keep an eye out for trouble both in and out of grounds when I just wanted to support my team.

If you were involved, it was nothing to be proud of, neither then or now.

Thankfully this happens rarely nowadays.
