MARK HUGHES: INGS SURPRISED ME

17/09/18

Mark Hughes admits he’s been surprised about Danny Ings’ ability level since joining Southampton from Liverpool.

He said: “I knew he was a very good player but his technical ability is probably a level better than I thought.

“He has come in and impressed me in terms of the way he is able to receive the ball, manipulate the ball to create space and his understanding of dropping the shoulder to gain an extra yard or two.

“Obviously, he wants to score goals but he also gets a lot of pleasure from making chances for others.”

He would have been a really good signing for us but I think were two big problems which we faced.

Firstly I'm not sure whether the money was actually there to sign him and secondly I think his personal choice of the two would be Southampton on the basis that they are an established Premier League team and the fact that our other signings were not really a signal of intent that we had the ambition to establish ourselves in the Premier League.
