The Cardiff City squad number shake-up 2018/19: Big numbers up for grabs in Premier League

By Dominic Booth

Friday 21st June 2018

Josh Murphy, Greg Cunningham and other new signings will be assigned shirt numbers for the Premier League

Cardiff City fans are still excitedly waiting for the release of their new kit, as preparations for the Premier League season step up a notch.

The signings of Josh Murphy and Greg Cunningham have added to that sense of excitement, with the Bluebirds already linked to a whole host of other names.

But no matter who joins the Neil Warnock revolution, one thing seems certain — that the squad numbers will get a big shake-up as players come and go.

Greg Halford and Matty Kennedy will no longer hold shirt numbers when their contracts expire on June 30 and others such as Lee Tomlin and Lee Camp have been linked with moves away from the Welsh capital.

Here's how the squad number situation looks right now and who could fill the vacancies...

Number 1

Depending on the future of Lee Camp, the No.1 jersey may become available this summer.

Camp was signed by Warnock 12 months ago to vie for the main goalkeeping berth with Neil Etheridge, but a combination of injuries and the stellar form of Etheridge throughout the campaign between the posts made it a no contest. Camp was subsequently loaned out to Sunderland — a spell that saw him heavily slated by Black Cats' fans — and his Cardiff future now looks uncertain.

If Camp does indeed vacate the No.1 shirt, Etheridge will be the overwhelming favourite to step in and give up his current No.25.

But there is also a chance Warnock will sign another goalkeeper to challenge Etheridge for the goalkeeping role. Whoever that may be could stake a claim to the No.1 shirt.

Number 7

There was a great deal of hype when Lee Tomlin was given the No.7 shirt 12 months ago, following Peter Whittingham's departure from Cardiff City.

Replacing a Cardiff legend was never going to be easy and Tomlin, despite a £1.5million price tag and occasional flashes of genius, struggled to perform consistently enough.

His January loan departure to Nottingham Forest proved a success, so much so that talks are believed to be ongoing regarding a permanent switch to the City Ground.

That would leave the No.7 free once again, with new signing Josh Murphy one of the candidates to take the jersey. Otherwise, one of Warnock's other new signings might fancy taking up the mantle.

Lee Tomlin scored his only Cardiff City goal of last season at Reading
Other shirts available

With the likes of Liam Feeney, Craig Bryson, Jamie Ward, Armand Traore and Yanic Wildschut all returning to their parent clubs after loan spells in the Welsh capital, a number of numbers will become available.

Numbers 12, 21, 29, 32 and 35 will be added to the list of options for new signings like Murphy and Cunningham, plus whoever else is signed this summer.

That's to add to Halford's No.15 and Kennedy's No.23 which will be vacated.

If Marko Grujic returns on loan , he may choose to again take the No.24 shirt which he wore last season and would be available again.

What number was Fred? At one time he had the No.9 shirt before being abducted by Alien's and disappearing off the face of the earth.
