“ Ron Healey RIP “

Former Cardiff City goalie, and one of the very best we've had, has passed away. Sad news rip Ron.

CARDIFF CITY 1974-1982

Over 200 appearances for Cardiff City

Republic Ireland Goal Keeper

Former Manchester City, Cardiff and Republic of Ireland keeper Ron Healey has died after collapsing on a cycle ride.

The 65-year-old played 38 for the current champions in the 1970s before moving to South Wales.

There he played 200 for the Bluebirds and also played twice for Ireland - including at Wembley against England, report the Manchester Evening News.

Tributes have been paid to Ron, who was born and raised in Wythenshawe and son Scott, 48, said: “He was very highly regarded and highly rated at Man City but he was only 18 when he made his debut.

"He was the number two to Joe Corrigan. He was very well rated there but Joe was very well established and Ron ended up moving on.”

He kept a keen interest supported City and continued to attend games at the Etihad stadium.

After his playing career, he worked at Manchester Airport and then for British Steel before becoming a prison officer at HMP Styal, where he spent more than 12 years.

He also set up a successful football coaching business, Just 4 Keepers, with his Scott.

Ron collapsed during a cycle ride with a friend through Altrincham on Monday.

An air ambulance was scrambled and he was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital but efforts to resuscitate him failed.

City fans paid tribute to ‘an excellent keeper’ in online message boards.

He became a fixture at Cardiff City, making more than 200 appearances, before a pelvic injury cut short his playing career aged 30.

Scott added: “He was out cycling with a friend. He loved his golf and got into cycling in the summer. He was out with a friend.

"He had a little bit of heart trouble previously and had heart bypass surgery a few years ago although his health was still pretty good after that, so this has come as a bit of a shock. He was always pretty active.”

Ron set up his coaching business with son about 19 years ago and Scott still runs it.

Very very sad news.

I have some very happy memories of Ron Healey and I have back in Cardiff, some great photos of me with him.

For me as a youngster growing up supporting Cardiff City, Ron Healey still stands out as one of our best ever keepers :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

A great servant to Cardiff City RIP :ayatollah:

R.I.P Ron Healey - sad news, indeed.
Like a lot on here, he was the keeper when I first started following the city. Didn't he save a late penalty at the Vetch in the late 70's?

RIP Ron....
Edmund: Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick?
Baldrick: No, but I've often thought that I'd like to.
Edmund: Well don't. It's a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roam the valleys terrifying people with their close-harmony singing

One of the first autographs I ever got was from Ron - He was a really nice chap too

I used to go and watch them training on the cabbage patch opposite Ninian Park regularly with my old man back in the day -

One of three excellent keepers I remember in my earlier days of following City. Fred Davies, Bill Irwin & Ron Healey. We have had some good ones over the years, and Ron was up there with the best. Sad news.

Two fond memories of him one of which has already been mentioned was a penalty save at the Jacks after which we came back to equalise through Peter Kitchen. They were proper derby days! and I remember seeing Ron play for Ireland in a friendly against England at Wembley. Keegan chipped him for England's second goal. On the following Saturday we were playing away (not sure where) and Ronnie Moore was taking the piss and trying to chip him in the warm up. He turned to us and said "pity he could f**g do that in the game - a reference to Ronnie's poor scoring record with the City. There were keepers before and since but he certainly stands out as one of the best and 65 these days is far too young. RIP Ron
