Lee Tomlin's permanent Nottingham Forest move now unlikely after Cardiff City wage increase - reports

Due to Cardiff City being promoted to the Premier League, Lee Tomlins wages have increased substantially.

Nottingham Forest are still keen on Cardiff City midfielder Lee Tomlin, but could well be priced out of a permanent deal.

According to Nottinghamshire Live , Reds boss Aitor Karanka is still a big fan of the playmaker, who arrived at the City Ground on a six-month loan spell back in August, in a deal that saw Jamie Ward go the other way.

The former Bristol City ace has since been a hit with the club, scoring four goals in 12 appearances for the club.

Karanka has already suggested that Tomlin is keen on securing a return to the East Midlands this summer, although Cardiff's recent promotion to the Premier League appears to have complicated matters.

Tomlin - like many other members of the Bluebirds squad - is understood to have received a substantial boost in his wages on the back of promotion back to the top flight, placing him on a far more lucrative pay packet, with his current contract set to run until 2020.

As a result, his wage demands could make a permanent move more unlikely, meaning Forest could be forced to go back in for a loan move, with Cardiff contributing a portion of the 29-year-old's wages.

Speaking shortly after Tomlin's return to the Welsh capital, Karanka said: "The main thing for me is that all of them (Tomlin, Colback and Pantilimon) left at the end of the season, all wanting to come back here.

"It means that they felt really good here; they felt the atmosphere in the changing room and confident on the pitch.

"We will try to do our best, but they are all Premier League players now and our job is to convince them. But as a club and as a manager, we have done our best to convince them to return."

Exactly. And also pay a loan fee. I would prefer to see him stay

Exactly. He came off the bench at home against Wednesday and his free kick set up the injury time equaliser and was off the bench again at Reading to score the injury time equaliser. Without those two points we wouldn't have gone up. We wont get many 90 minutes off him but he's worth hanging onto for these cameo performances that could be worth those few vital points for us next season.

He knows City will sub his wages if he goes out on loan. No one takes a pay cut unless they have to.

I'm sure Tomlin is keen to return to Nottingham F but is that on his City wages or on what NF can afford to pay him? We are all aware of the real world of football business and LT is unlikely to move for less money, although I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Also lets remember the manager is bound to say this, If Karanka goes up to Tomlin and says I would love to have you back next season would you like to come back. Tomlin is hardly going to turn around and say no mate.

Well I wouldn't want to stay at a club, especially if I'm not comfortable there. He's obviously homesick and wants to be closer to home. Especially if he a family man aswell.

A player has to have a certain amount of personal commitment to stay fit too. There's only so much a club can do.
