Neil Warnock fumes at errors as Cardiff suffer promotion setback

Second-half defensive howlers saw the Bluebirds beaten 3-1 by Derby.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock blamed “Sunday League” errors for the 3-1 defeat at Derby which stalled his team’s advance towards automatic promotion.

Warnock saw his side concede three times in the second half as Derby won for only the third time in 14 games to return to the play-off places.

It had all been going to plan for Cardiff when Callum Paterson sent a swerving volley inside Scott Carson’s near post in the 28th minute but the game changed after Gary Madine missed a great chance in the 64th minute.

Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge tried to keep the ball in instead of letting it go out for a goal kick and when Richard Keogh headed it back, Cameron Jerome held off a challenge to roll in a shot.

A dreadful mistake by Yanic Wildschut resulted in the second when he was robbed close to the byline by Andre Wisdom, who set up Matej Vydra to drive in his 21st goal of the season.

Another error, this time by skipper Sean Morrison, allowed Jerome to seal it in the 90th minute and Warnock admitted: “It’s just unlike us.

“I thought it was a game we should have won. I’m disappointed in crucial decisions but that doesn’t compensate for the disappointment of letting three Sunday League goals in.

“When you make elementary errors like we did for all three goals – Neil could have let it go out for a goal kick, (Aron) Gunnarsson slices it, there’s that many mistakes in one goal and the second one was a forward doing the wrong thing.”

Warnock had been critical when the fixture was called off last month because of snow but he joked: “I can’t blame the weather for the goals we conceded, can I?

“But I think every club apart from Wolves would love to be in our situation, with 86 points, and it just shows how far we have come.”

The Bluebirds remain a point ahead of third-placed Fulham with two matches remaining.

Derby climbed two points ahead of Millwall in the battle for the top six and manager Gary Rowett knew how important the result was.

“It’s massive,” he said. “I said to the players beforehand that we’re not going to get a second chance because if we didn’t win it’s out of our hands.

“It’s a massive boost for us at the moment because having been on the run we’ve been on, it’s incredibly deflating and difficult to put your finger on exactly what it is that can make you go from only losing a couple of games in 22 to only winning a couple in 13.

“It’s been really tough, probably the most difficult period of my six-year managerial career, but we retained belief and I thought tonight was probably as well as we’ve played. I thought we showed a lot of courage to get back.”

He has every right to be. For a team and manager that prides itself on keepi g the game simple and take no chances in defence certain players let him down by forgetting the team ethos. Joke defending at times and we got punished by them.

Might want to look at him self to. Derby was walking through the middle and came at us. Should adjusted for that, and a few personal errors was bound to happen with the massive momentum they built.

Totally disagree here manga bench pelts or jazz at right back. Manga leaves so much space in behind and teams are seeing this

For me the midfield was to blame. We could not string two passes together and the defence was put under enormous pressure. If you allow another team to get constant balls into the box any defence will eventually collapse. If only we had someone in midfield like that Lee Tomlin at Forest or maybe that Grukic bloke at Liverpool who could actually pass a ball.

news flash..Cardiff 2nd in league with 86points
Forest failed to score in 10 of the 15 games Tomlin has been passing the ball around in..
and the 5 games they did manage to score.? well he had been hooked off and was already on his 2nd sausage roll in Gregs for 50% of their goals .

It was a dreadful second half last night, and the mood was very subdued on the bus coming home. Still, no point crying over spilt milk, we just have to move on. The two remaining games are both winnable, and if not, then we need to prepare for the play-offs. Onwards and upwards!

Hope you and the team are reading this forum Neil!
Deserve credit for where we are but you deserve the flack for that second half performance!
Wrong team selection, wrong tactics!
Sort it out, drop certain players rather than stick with them!
Many fans fuming too!
Get our best 11 on the pitch for the next 2 cup finals!
We can still do it, but not with that team v Derby!

Second half we under attack derby came out with the bit between there teeth .we still looked capable but individual errors cost us and we got over run didnt we.
Keeper to do that was madness reset for the corner and clear your lines .
Whidchut turning into trouble is school boy not ssunday league he new that what an idiot was angry about that just stupid.
Morrison ended up in no mans land made it look ridiculous been a cracking player all season though.
Those errors cost us but we got over run as a team again and seemed to just put up with it you could just sense the goals coming.
Derby fully deserved the win in the second half.
Play fast tempo football against us and teams can beat us cant they.
Didnt cope with derby s threat second half we defo missed brysons industry off the ball.

Hope they get it sorted against hull as it could be the same ending again but we cant get to down start of the season we'd all jumped at this position and we have the upper hand so please let us take it.

Agree, Manga is barley a centre half let alone a full back.

Yes should seen the problems derby started to pose and adjusted accordingly but! Those errors were not result of pressure they were simply stupid mistakes probably never to be repeated :old:

Stupid mistakes yes, probably never to be repeated??? I'm not sure on that one, because in order for that then there has to be a change in the team for Hull. Is it to late in the season for whole scale changes?

Its our final throw of the dice.

Disagree with you mate. It’s under pressure you make stupid mistakes. 97 out of 100 type of thing..

Our style of play with the direct long ball has its flaws, losing possession and in turn inviting the repeated pressure is one of them. Added to this, and it's been pretty obviously of late, is that the players are tired, not as sharp, cheaply giving the ball away, picking the wrong pass etc which again just adds more and more pressure and at some point something's gonna give, Derby for me was just a clear example of this.
