A man was attacked outside the Albert pub in Walton Breck Road

A 53-year-old man is in a critical condition after he was attacked outside Anfield before Liverpool's Champions League semi-final match with Roma.

Two men, who are aged 25 and 26, and come from Rome, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The victim, believed to be a Liverpool fan, suffered a head injury and is being treated in hospital, police said.

In a statement Liverpool said it was "shocked and appalled" and would be offering the victim "our full support".

The attack happened outside the Albert pub in Walton Breck Road at about 19:35 BST.

Det Insp Paul Speight of Merseyside Police said: "Witnesses report that the victim was hit with a belt and then fell to the ground.

"His condition is currently described as critical and his next of kin have been informed."

There were clashes between Liverpool and Roma supporters shortly before kick-off.

About 80 Roma fans are thought to have used a side road to reach an area where Liverpool supporters had gathered.

One supporter was seen motionless on the road and BBC Sport footage showed another fan carrying a hammer.

Seven men, aged between 20 and 43, have been arrested for offences including affray, assault, possession of offensive weapons and criminal damage.

Ch Supt Dave Charnock said fans from both sides had been "involved in isolated pockets of disorder".

He said detectives were also investigating the use of flares outside Anfield stadium prior to the game.

"A number of those in the crowd that had gathered to greet the Liverpool team coach were in possession of flares and work is ongoing to identify those responsible and to establish if offences have been committed".

Supporter seen with a hammer outside Anfield

Trouble broke out behind the Kop End, with reports of Roma supporters attacking home fans.

BBC Sport news correspondent David Ornstein said the pre-match trouble started when a "group of Roma fans arrived via Venmore Street, burst on to Walton Breck Road and attacked, many using belts".

He said a Liverpool fan was knocked to the floor and received lengthy medical treatment.

He added that there were "skirmishes, projectiles" and at least one person had a hammer.

Sunday Times football correspondent Jonathan Northcroft tweeted that the "attack was sudden", adding that the "Roma group were chased down the street before police arrived".

Police are appealing for anyone with video footage or information to contact them.

Daily Telegraph

Two men from Rome have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a Liverpool supporter was left fighting for his life following an altercation between fans ahead of the Champions League semi-final at Anfield.

Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final meeting with Roma was marred by violent scenes outside the stadium after the two sets of fans clashed in the shadow of the Kop.

The injured man, believed to be from Ireland and with his brother, was being treated for his injuries at Walton Neurological Centre, where his condition is described as critical, Merseyside Police said.

The 25-year-old and 26-year-old were arrested after police launched an operation to track down the man's assailants.

Liverpool Football Club said it was "shocked and appalled" by the incident and urged fans and those who attended the game to help Merseyside Police with their appeal for information.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight, said: "Witnesses report that the victim was hit with a belt and then fell to the ground.

"Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was taken by ambulance to Walton Neurological Centre, where he is being treated for a head injury. His condition is currently described as critical and his next of kin have been informed."

Watching the video clips and judging by the media reports this was premeditated violence caused by the Italians. I suggest they are the ones who should be kicked out. The levels of violence outside of Britain are on far higher scales than we are used to and it's getting to be the norm now for foreign ultras to come over here and routinely attack our supporters. Watch out for the number of Liverpool supporters who will be stabbed and beaten in the return leg.

I hope they get the bloke with the hammer and any others using offensive weapons and treat them to a good 10 years behind bars.

Can’t believe someone took a hammer to a football match. Mental.

Aside from the past you have to make a judgement on what happened last night and it's appalling from Roma.

I lived in Rome for four years, 2010 to 2014. AS Roma fans have a reputation for this. Pre-planned violence, using various weapons, knives, baseball bats etc. They often wear crash helmets. A few years ago they carried out an attack on some Tottenham fans, who were over for a Europa League game with SS Lazio. The Spurs fans were scarfers and shirters, having a late night drink in a bar. Nearby is a Roma bar, who tipped the ultras off. They blocked the doors, and attacked, hospitalising several Tottenham fans. About as cowardly as you get. Roma were not even playing!

AS Roma fans seem to hit soft targets, like this middle aged man last night. When Feyenoord arrived in Rome in large numbers, they were nowhere to be seen. Same with Real Madrid.

Not all Italian fans are like this. Italian a ultras are no angels, (anymore than we are!), but you never really hear about this from other groups, just AS Roma.

The Italian OB, (the polizia and carabinieri), don't mess about either.

I might be biased, but I used to watch SS Lazio out there. Much more civilised.

Hopefully the Liverpool fan will recover, and the AS Roma fans will get the book thrown at them.

I certainly do agree! Naples is run by the Camorra, the city is outside of the control of the Italian state. The Camorra control everything, right down to parking around the San Paolo stadium. The Napoli ultras are, basically, the Mafia. Most of the rest of Italy hate them, certainly both Rome clubs do.
