Liverpool loanee Marko Grujic stakes World Cup claim as Cardiff City star Aron Gunnarsson finally returns to football -

Saturday 24th March 2018

Cardiff City ace Aron Gunnarsson has taken a significant step towards full fitness, after completing 45 minutes of Iceland's defeat to Mexico in Santa Clara on Friday. :bluebird:

Despite asking plenty of questions of the Mexican defence in the first half, Iceland slipped to 3-0 defeat at the Levi's Stadium, in front of 68,917 fans.

Marco Fabian's first-half strike and a brace from Miguel Layun after the break helped seal victory for El Tri, who are ranked just one place above Heimir Hallgrimsson's charges in the FIFA World Rankings.

Despite the defeat, there were a number of positives for Iceland, most notably the return of captain Gunnarsson, who took the field for the first time since Cardiff's 1-0 win at Barnsley in November, before being replaced by Holmar Örn Eyjolfsson at the break.

After observing his struggles with a long-term ankle problem, Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock will have been delighted to see the return of the 28-year-old ahead of what promises to be a crucial run of fixtures in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

He will also be keeping a close eye on Iceland's match with Peru at New York's Red Bull Arena on Tuesday.

Gunnarsson was just one of several Cardiff stars to be involved in international action this week. Here's a quick look at how the others got on.

Marko Grujic (Serbia v Morrocco, March 23) :bluebird:

The young midfielder, who is targeting a place in Serbia's World Cup squad, replaced Nemanja Matic afterr 67 minutes as Serbia slipped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Morocco in Turin.

Hakim Ziyech gave the Atlas Lions the lead from the spot before the half hour, before Dusan Tadic's leveller on 37 minutes.

However, Serbia, preparing for the first World Cup in eight years, found themselves behind again just three minutes later courtesy of Khalid Boutaib's strike, as Morocco secured an impressive win at he Stadio Olumpico.

Grujic has said: "Playing in the World Cup is one of the reasons I came to Cardiff.

"The World Cup is one of the biggest events for every player but it will be tough to earn a spot."

Callum Paterson (Scotland v Costa Rica, March 23) :bluebird:

Paterson played the full 90 minutes of Alex McLeish's first game as Scotland boss on the right wing, which ended in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Costa Rica.

Paterson, along with Charlie Mulgrew and Grant Hanley, was perhaps unfairly criticised for his culpability in the only goal of the game at Hampden Park, which came courtesy of Marco Urena's strike after 14 minutes.

The Bluebirds man will certainly have better days for Scotland, who were booed off by their own fans after a disappointing evening.

The Tartan Army will demand improvements when they see their side take on Hungary on Tuesday.

Armand Traore (Senegal v Uzbekistan March 23) :bluebird:

The Nottingham Forest loanee made his first appearance in international football for five years by coming off the bench during his side-s 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, Morocco.

The full-back was introduced after 74 minutes, replacing Crystal Palace man Pape Souare.

The Uzbeks took the lead after 20 minutes courtesy of Otabek Shukurov's penalty, before Moussa Konate equalised just after the hour.

Next up for the Lions of Teranga is a test against Bosnia on the 27th.
