Twenty-five English football fans were arrested in Amsterdam on Thursday after violent clashes with the police.

An Amsterdam police force statement said the "drunken" fans had thrown beer bottles at officers.

It comes ahead of England's Friday night friendly against Holland.

England manager Gareth Southgate had called on his team's supporters to behave, saying it is important for fans to "support us in the right way" and "respect our opponents".

He added that fans "are representing our country in the same way we are".

"They will be the mirror of our country that people in Holland look at," he said.

'Heavy handed'

The arrests come a year after violence marred another England friendly, in Dortmund in Germany, which saw the FA issue some fans with life bans on membership of the England Supporters Travel Club (ESTC).

The FA said it will look at the incident in Amsterdam to see if ESTC members were involved and action needed to be taken.

But one fan said the police had been "very heavy handed" and had attacked England fans "for no reason".

"It's like they want England to push them back to make us look bad," Josh Mahoney, who is attending his first England game with his family, said.

"There was a riot van at the door pulling fans out of the pub. We had been in there several hours with no trouble at all," he added.

Twenty-five England supporters were arrested after clashing with police in Amsterdam before their friendly with Netherlands on Friday night.

Local police tweeted to say they made the arrests in the city centre. Police say the 25 were detained for committing a number of offences, including throwing beer bottles at police officers.

On Thursday England manager Gareth Southgate urged the 5,253 England supporters who will be in the ground to behave while they are in Amsterdam.

“I think it’s important that our fans come and enjoy the game, that they support us in the right way,” Southgate said on Thursday. “But I would strongly urge them to behave in the right way and respect our opponents and the country they’re in. They are representing our country in the same way we are. They will be the mirror of our country that people in Holland look at.”

A video was posted earlier showing a number of people throwing beer, glasses and bottles from a bridge at a group of people on a boat travelling down a canal in Amsterdam. One person then threw a bike into the water.

I would be totally embarrassed if welsh fans behaved like they do. Not everybody is an angel, and we have all done stupid things lashed up at the football but they seem to do it in mass and whatever your issue leave the innnocent people out of it.

If they adopt that attitude in Russia which I think they will, they will get absolutely slaughtered and the authorities will just watch it happen that’s for sure.

Most got arrested as they now have an excuse not to go to Russia

Absolutely shameful and embarrassing, trips like that can be remembered for all the right reasons but for that they won't.

In fairness, I've been out here 3 nights now with my wife - an anniversary trip we booked before we knew England would be out here..

Fans we have met or spoken to have been fine. Let's not tar everyone with the same brush. As Cardiff fans we should know better after having carried the burden of what some have done before in many grounds around the country
