CONFIRMED: ' GARRY MONK TAKES OVER '

Fri Mar 02, 2018 5:46 pm

CONFIRMED - BIRMINGHAM CITY STATEMENT:

Monday 5th March 2018

The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Garry Monk as our new manager.

He will be assisted by Pep Clotet, James Beattie and Darryl Flahavan.

Sean Rush joins Monk's backroom staff as Head of Performance and Ryan Needs comes in as Head of Analysis.

After talks today, Monk has signed a three-and-a-half year contract.

Assistant Manager Clotet, First Team Coach Beattie and Goalkeeper Coach Flahavan have also agreed contracts until the summer of 2021.

The Club is delighted to have secured the services of one of the game's brightest young managers in Monk, 38.

He began his managerial career when Swansea City Club Captain, in February 2014, succeeding Michael Laudrup.

Having kept Swans in the Premier League, he guided them to a club-best eighth in the 2014-15 campaign.

In the summer of 2016 Monk joined Leeds United and brought the good times back to Elland Road following several mid-table finishes.

In June 2017, Monk took up the reins at newly-relegated Middlesbrough and his time at the Riverside came to an end in December, following an away victory over Sheffield Wednesday with the team sitting three points outside the Play-Offs.

As a player, centre-half Monk made 339 career appearances and lifted the League Cup with Swansea in 2013. He also captained Swans to the League One title and Championship Play-Off Final victory.

He began his career as a trainee at Torquay United before moving to Southampton. It was at Swansea, where he moved in 2004, that he really carved out a niche.

Birmingham City managerial favourite Garry Monk had this to say about his next job

Monk is the favourite to replace Steve Cotterill as Birmingham City's next manager

Garry Monk says he is ready to get back into club management - three months after leaving Middlesbrough.

Monk parted company with Boro in December with the Riverside club turning to former West Brom Tony Pulis.

He has now emerged as the overwhelming favourite to replace Steve Cotterill as Birmingham City's manager although Birmingham Live understands that Cotterill will be in the charge of the clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Cotterill's future has been the subject of intense speculation this week following a run of four straight, goalless Championship defeats.

I don't know who to feel more sorry for Jellyfish or Birmingham because both are sliding down fast. :occasion5:

His 'stock' has certainly gone down rapidly since leaving Swansea, Tony. But then again, he rode on the back of the excellent work carried out by previous managers at that club. Since then, he has gone from one 'crisis' club to another

Feel sympathy for Birmingham City but never for Garry Monk! :(

Last time Birmingham changed their manager they won their first game under the new man - against us!

How the hell did we lose that game?

Let's hope that history doesn't repeat itself if they appoint a new manager (especially if it's Gary Monk :o ) before next Saturday!

I am thinking the same thing to. Never rated Cottrill,,,, not at championship level anyway, so not surprised the way things have turned out. As for GM,,,, I don't think so either.

I was thinking the same thing. Might not be a bad thing though with Monk in charge against us, as didn’t we win against Leeds and Middlesbrough while he was there.

We lost that game because the ref failed to give us a penalty when Joe Bennett got his head kicked off.

That's one of several points the officials have robbed from us this season. We would be top of the league now if the officials did their jobs properly!

Hopefully he is in charge tomorrow or Monday, his first game will be home to Boro Tuesday, panic over.

I was at that game and we were awful.

Considering we are about to go through a similar scenario, up against a Birmingham side with a new manager, it has me a bit worried even though its Monkfish.

I know we were awful.

We also didn't deserve to win at Millwall.

But a penalty is a penalty and a goal is a goal. We should have had a draw instead of a loss at Birmingham and a win instead of a draw in both Millwall games, so 5 points have been robbed from us in those 3 games alone.

I'm drifting off topic here mind. Getting back on topic, I hope Birmingham beat Middlesbrough Tuesday and Cotterill keeps his job for our game. It will be a much easier Birmingham team to play against if they don't have a new manager.

Birmingham's a cracking club. Much like us in lots of ways but struggling because of the owners.
Still cringe at Cotteril's interview after they beat us on his debut. :?
