About Preston North End

Preston North End Football Club (often shortened to PNE) is a professional association football club located in the Deepdale area of Preston, Lancashire. They play in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was a founding member of the Football League and completed the inaugural season unbeaten to become the first league champions, in the same season winning the FA Cup without conceding a goal to become the first club to achieve the English football "Double". Preston's unbeaten League and Cup season earned them the nickname "The Invincibles".

Preston's most recent major trophy success was their FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town in 1938. Many notable players have played for the club, including Tom Finney, Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty, Alan Kelly, Sr. and Graham Alexander.

Based on results achieved in the Football League from 1888–89 to 2015–16, Preston were ranked as the fourth most-successful English football club of all time domestically, while only Notts County had played more Football League games than Preston.

Nice opportunity for us to turn the central heating back on and crank the heat up on the wurzels before Wolves thump them.

We had a poor game against them away earlier in the season and I feel not so co fired the about this but we really need a win now to gain some confidence back.

I think we will see a big performance Friday, but let's make no mistake, Preston are a tough side to beat.

They are near the top despite having weeks with 7-8 defensive players injured.

They've got one of the best defensive records in the division and rarely concede many.

It's going to be a huge battle, but I reckon the character in this team will come through.

1-0

PNE left-back could return in Sky clash with the Bluebirds

Lancashire Post

Thursday 28th December 2017

Greg Cunningham could be in line for his first Preston start for more than four months at Cardiff City tomorrow night.

PNE manager Alex Neil says the left-back ‘comes into consideration’ for the clash in South Wales.

Cunningham has been out of action since the middle of August when the hamstring muscle in his left leg came away from a tendon.

He had surgery to reattach the muscle and tendon and has been steadily working his way back to fitness.

Neil named Cunningham on the bench for the Boxing Day draw with Barnsley but was not able to get him on to the pitch at Oakwell.

But he is giving serious consideration to ‘chucking him in at the deep end’ for the televised meeting with Neil Warnock’s men.

Ref Watch: Cardiff City

Preston FC

For the second time the season, our match official for Friday night’s live TV encounter at the Cardiff City Stadium, sees Isle of Wight official James Linington taking charge of North End.

His first PNE game of this season was the Lilywhites’ 2-1 win at Hull City back in September and overall this season he has refereed 24 games, issuing 78 cautions and five red cards, having also overseen Cardiff City once, in their goalless draw with Derby County back in September.

Last season the referee made his first visit ever to Deepdale for the clash with Wolves back in November and was then the referee in the away game at Derby County back in March.

The season before he was referee of the PNE game at Ashton Gate, when Greg Cunningham scored the winner against his former club and that was his third game in charge of PNE.

The other time he refereed North End was another game in the south of England, when the Lilywhites won 1-0 at Gillingham in the League One promotion season, courtesy of Paul Huntington’s goal in his first start of the season.

James will be assisted by Neil Davies

Who are the key men?

Junior Hoilett (Cardiff City):

The winger rarely has a bad game and if Cardiff are to arrest their current slump, the Canadian will be vital. His tricky feet and relentless work-rate can have a big effect going forward and tracking back.

Jordan Hugill (Preston):

Neil Warnock described the No.9 as one of the best strikers in the Championship. And based on Hugill's colossal performance when the sides last met (when Preston beat Cardiff 3-0), he might be right.

The Bluebirds must marshal the impressive frontman.

I think we will have a point to prove after the last couple of performances. Going for a 3-1 win and a good performance to go with it.

We have conceded quite a few goals since Morrison has been out injured so I think we will concede again, having saying that, Zohore has found the net again which I think will have fired him up and be hungry again. On that assumption, my conclusion is a 3-1 city win (I hope) ;)

Cardiff City take on Preston in the Championship tonight, looking to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats:

Cardiff are unbeaten in eight home league matches against Preston (W5 D3) since losing 1-0 in November 2004

The Lilywhites haven’t done a Football League double over the Bluebirds since 2004/05

The Bluebirds haven’t lost three league games in a row since September 2016, in a run of four defeats — that included one against Preston

Preston are unbeaten in their last eight Championship games (W4 D4), with only table-topping Wolves currently on a longer run without defeat (10 games)

Junior Hoilett has been directly involved in 12 league goals this term (six goals and six assists); already his most in a single campaign since 2011/12 with Blackburn Rovers (also 12).

Player to watch tonight

Player to watch tonight

Is Jordan Hugill the man to watch in Preston’s side tonight?

The big No.9 is a real handful and contributed a lot, not in terms of goals, when the Lilywhites beat Cardiff 3-0 back in September.

Sol Bamba and Bruno Manga will have to be back at their best this evening to cope with the 25-year-old, who is getting plenty of transfer interest at the moment

The crowd try and get Cardiff going... because so far it’s been the same old CCS story of a sluggish start. Almost as if the Bluebirds are concerned with not conceding rather than taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

Etheridge plays out a couple of long balls of very low quality.

Cardiff's passing is off-colour

Gallagher’s free-kick is into the wall and Horgan’s rebound does the same. Cardiff need a sustained period on the ball now, they’re being pressed very well by the visitors.

Damour has barely played a successful pass.
